    In short. PBN's will work for many many years to come. If you don't have one yet, you're not doing SEO right in 2014

    Good news, but kind of worries me a little bit. Remember how Matt made a video saying google toolbar PR wasn't going to be updating in Q4 2013? ... yeah...

    A search engine that relies on anything else but backlinks is probably years away.

    No way social signals can replace them as a primary metric, and I don't see how it even becomes important short of Google buying Facebook, Twitter, etc.

    I don't think he has this big button labeled PR UPDATE on his desk and he has an omnipotent power over it... I think that was just some communication mishap in the company.

    I've been rambling about this pretty much forever - there is just no other way to make a search engine work, until AI is perfect, and that's a significant time still.

    So, unless G plans to manually build a list, based on the collective opinions of their staff, they're left with using the algo they have, which looks for popular sites to promote in the SERPs.
