Fast Foward to 0:50 if you would like to hear him say that.

What are your thoughts on this? Usually .edu or .gov sites have high PR so it is probably beneficial anyhow to get a link on them if you can.

I think that links from PAGES with zero PR are fairly worthless to your own PR. The algorithm for the PR numbers is published. PR has very little bearing on SERPs these days.

I think that is just plain wrong to take as Vangel everything this guy says.

The big G has developed his monopoly thanks to the secrecy of his algorithm, so I wouldn't be surprised if Matt Cutts purposely disinform on specific topics.

Personally I dont even care if the link is nofollow since not all search engine are using the nofollow and ****************.

I agree that you cannot trust Matt Cutts statements if you watch a few of his videos he is very careful in what he says and how he expresses himself

Nah hes not lieing. .edu and .gov are just always good PR, I think it's pretty silly to assume you get more credit for them then other types.

Honestly... what do you guys expect him to say? He is probably one of the most subscribed to and followed figures within the whitehat/greyhat SEO communities.

You really think he is going to say "yup, having backlinks from high PR .edu and .gov sites carry a lot of weight and will help you rank higher!" ... so that 10s of thousands of webmasters go off onto spamming/acquiring .edu and .gov links.

C'mon... think for yourself... I didn't even watch this video as I don't need to after watching his other ones - the only thing he can logically promote is "well organized, unique content website, with natural backlinks that come from your visitors sharing this much valued information"

The main reason .GOV and .EDUs are worth more is because the sites in general are much higher authority. I mean what is a more powerful site tsa.gov or myfarmporn.blogspot.com?

That's exactly correct - well put. Now if both the sites you mentioned had the same content and "value" (page rank, etc) then they may carry the same weight, but since they don't, the tsa.gov site will obviously be more "powerful"

I don't fully understand the trustrank algorithm, but I'd bet a .edu or .gov would generally be more trusted than any old WPMU.

    yeah you can't believe him.
If he did confirm the linkjuice of .gov and .edu links there would be a tidal wave of dot gov sellers and hacking.

The proof that they can not deny is all the big viagra spam sites use dot gov's and dot edu's to secure #1 positions in the serp's if only for a day,,,, and make thousands of dollars in that small timeframe.

    Goofle can't deny that.

I don't know... Matt Cutts never really tells the full truth. Like, if you listen to his video about blog spam, all he says is "oh yeah no-follow and uhm we have some algorithms".

Matt cutt is from google. and i never think that they will even disclose a 20% of thier secret algo .
No matter what anybody says .gov and .edu links even with nofollow tag are considered to be good.
They are trusted sites and they carry a good weightage for your site trust.

Nope. It doesn't matter, and doesn't affect SERP results. There are lots of N/A and 0 pr pages in google tops, even for very competitive keywords. Think about low competitive keywords - if PR matters why there are no-pr sites in tops instead of PR-9 ones containing one or two relevant articles ?

PR does matter for SERP result, but not for the exact site with high-PR page, but for another sites that are linked from the high-PR page.

Working links from GOV and EDU sites have the same value as the same links from other sites indeed. But: (1) outgoing links from EDU or GOV site have better chance to get "trusted" and start work, (2) EDU or GOV pages have better chances to make incoming links from other pages get "trusted", so EDU's and GOV's gather PR faster and raise in SERP easier.

The reason people may target .GOV or .EDU sites is because they will generally have higher PR.
