Yeah, they are already doing that now with panda 3.3 so I think when Matt Cutts said that he was giving a window into what is occurring now.

Google never gives warnings in the future as to what they are doing, why would he say that in off handed comment at SXSW...

In the list of 40 revisions in the panda 3.3. update, I believe number 38 or 39 was increased spam detection. This is what he was referencing.

No, its not - that thread is on 'semantic search'

As for an over optimized penalty this is either that Google are just losing the plot again or its just Cutts saying crap to try and cloud the water and drive away spam. The whole of Cutts career is based on 'foiling' spammers and so he needs to use anything he can to keep people guessing and confused over what Google actually has as means to set SERPS.

Their algorithms are tame, look at how ehow ranks multiple articles for the same query base, its bullshit. I search for 'query x' and whyhow will have multiple articles all listed for the same query which is crap search. They are only concerned with their own properties and big coin show sites, like ehow and about.shit.com

Semantic search will affect no more than 10-20% of searches. Most searches are not made to get an exact answer. But those searches who want an exact answer will get it.

It's not a big deal, and they already do it now. Search "Google Stock Price" and what do you get listed at the top, google's stock price...

They are already doing this, stop saying this will change anything...THEY ALREADY DO IT!

The reason google is cryptic about what they are doing is b/c they work off an algorithm...algorithms can be figured out and exploited and as long as they use an algorithm, this will continue to occur...

Its a math equation and when its solved it can be exploited...then google changes it and the whole dance starts over...

    this story will never end...

I'm just about to say the same thing, but you've already said it. Google now has become the most dangerous creature on earth. The warning of over optimization is just another bull shit from them.

seo is not dead...the whole google algorithm is based on links...

you can argue that people linking to your site is dead b/c most people just click the facebook like button or the twitter retweet button...

what drives google insane is they don't access to all this information, although they do have access to twitter retweets...

Absolutely agree with you there Manny. Google has missed the entire social media train, their results are absolute garbage at the moment, everyone knows it, and they're having to pull out some bull shit PR to try and minimise the damage.
