Master List of Techniques to Build Membership Sites

I don't see a master list of techniques to drive members to membership sites, so I thought, why not create one.

I'm thinking the build it and they will come stance no longer works. So as I posted in another thread, I think providing an offer/giveaway, or offering free membership for those who sign up during the first month (if the site requires a membership fee) would be a great way to drive members to a membership site.

Please share your tips if you've built a successful community.
