Manual action for "Pure Spam", but I'm not the spammer!

Okay, so here's a new one I've come across today...

I have a website where I post content rich, user engaging articles. The site had a lot of hits and provided quality content to visitors, they browsed page to page and I'd highly expect them to find what they came for.

However today I opened WMT to find a manual action for "Pure Spam". I thought what!? There's no way my site is pure spam, it has a custom built design and quality content etc, it's a good site and it's built for the users.

Then I searched some of the content from my site in Google and I noticed a lot of other websites have been stealing my content and spinning it, but they are obviously the spammers and not me, I'm providing the original stuff. What on earth do I do? I've submitted a reconsideration request but how on earth could I combat this from happening again in the future (providing I do actually get reconsidered)?

You can disavow links but what on earth do I do with copied content, and also since it's spun sometimes it's very hard to find, I probably just came across the less well spun stuff.

Insert your domain link without HTML tags inside your article ..
like this mydomain.com and write the rest of article ..
This is the only way to prove that posts are your ..
By the way Manual Action 90% comes from you competitions reports ..
That's happened to me before and forget my site .

Thank you for your reply ficfroc, I've taken a look at your post. The issue with my website though is that it really isn't spam, all the content is fully hand written purely for visitor engagement to provide them with the answer to what they were looking for.

I too am wondering the same questions as you, is a manual penalty really manual? There are a HECK of a lot of websites on the internet, could they really manually review them all and hand out penalties?

Furthermore I'm also wondering, the same as you, whether it's specifically content based or link based. I did have a few naughty links to the site which I have now disavowed, but most of these were all from sites that has suspended accounts anyway.

I feel sorry for you because it seems like you got it on your longterm moneysite .

for your case you might want to have a look at matt cutts video :

And this link wich shows live actions taken on "PURE SPAM" : https://www.google.com/insidesearch/howsearchworks/fighting-spam.html

In this link , if you scroll down under the live actions, you can see that there nearly 500k manual actions taken per month, let's say that they have like 500 manual reviewers , each reviewer has to review like 1k website per month.

I tend to beleive this is actually a real manual action.

i found a thread where I posted the manual reviewers guidelines for 2013 you can find it here, if you are willing to fix you website. I wish you good luck Mate.

As for me, I'm just gonna move to another website and see how it goes .

Hmm interesting They would have taken action this fast ?? I mean this website have been ranking for only 2 days before I receive the manual action penalty.

I'm really still wondering if it's really manual or automated ....

Great post ficfroc. Very useful document you linked too I'll have a good read through that.

I'm also now thinking that the manual actions may actually be manual, I just really can't understand why they'd penalise my site. I'm praying that it wasn't actually manual and it was a mistake made by an automated bot or something.

I do wish the same for you.

Anyway I'm gonna try to rank my website again And I'll see how things go on, This time I'll try to avoid the mistakes I've made that might be related to content.

If I get a pure spam again, this means that it is really manual , and it is probably because some stupid guy is reporting me (I'll take action on that too).

Good luck cleaning up your website. And wish you recover it fast. Keep us updated.

What type of links are you building to your site?

If it is propped up on a PBN, the "pure spam" penalty will apply as well.

Use scroogle authorship to protect your content. People might still scrape it but scroogle will know that it is yours provided that it is unique.

Thanks for wishing me luck, I'll let you know how I get on. I just came across a PDF on a government website that says my website provides useful content, so that should be something nice to show Google if they decide not to accept my initial reconsideration.

I did have a link network pointing to it (purchased from this forum), but only about 2 links were active all the rest of the sites has been suspended. I disavowed all those links before submitting the request. It will be a real shame if that's the reason behind my penalty because I asked the provider of these links last week to remove them for me but he didn't get round to it :(

Also, thanks lucas for that tip I didn't know that.

I just want to add that gyuman said in the thread I have opened that the pure spam is a manual action and is probably due to some of you competitor reporting you.

So be aware that there is a jealous person behind all this mess.

Yeah, that's the reason initially I was cleaning up my backlinks, I wanted to start a fresh profile but was worried that a disavow may open an investigation. I'm absolutely praying that they come back and give me a reconsideration.

I was also wondering, if they don't reconsider it, what would happen if I just put the exact same site on a new domain? Would it get reindexed or just ignored?

Pure spams from what I can tell are a mixture of both on site issues and off site issues.

From what I've seen and read it's not usually PBN's that are causing the problem but rather spam links like xrumer and scrapebox style links.

That will require link removals, and not disavows to recover from. Good luck!

Let us know about your link profile because I'm curious. It's likely spammed out by spammers.

You may even have some vulnerabilities on your site that you may not be aware of that spammers are taking advantage of.

I've only ever had the pure spam message on blog network sites, so maybe your site looks too much like it's part of a blog network.

We're discussing something related on another thread.

Google control links but they disallow us to buy/sell/trade links. Basically Google created a currency(links) that they control but they don't let anyone else trade in that currency. If this isn't abusive monopolistic behavior, nothing is. It's like Nintendo disallowed anyone to trade game cartriges, or Sony disallowed the trade of Bluray games. It's ridiculous. You create a market, it's a free market in America, Google's base country, but they disallow you to trade in that market.

So links are equity, they are THE online equity, but they don't allow you to trade it, only Google gets to control links and Matt Cutts makes videos dictating how that equity will be traded, OR ELSE..... Worse yet, that equity was NOT invented by Google. Links were there before Google, they're not a Google patent they could control.

Google has created a mess, their contradictions are coming back to haunt them. "Disavow links" is how I fixed a few sites, but disavowing links is the most ridiculous shit I've ever seen. It's like we're to blame for links pointed at us. It forces you to become a member of Google Webmaster Stools, OR ELSE....

This is ridiculous. Google's abuse of their search dominance is clearly anti-competitive.

Honestly I take pride in the design and content of my website, I have even shown a number of friends and they agreed with me that there's no way it's spam.

However, many websites began stealing the content from my site and spinning it onto their own, do you think this could be a problem? Maybe a manual action isn't "manual" and the computer has flagged my site up as spam.

I did have a poor backlink profile to the site, used a PBN and also a handful of spammy backlinks, however I would have thought if it was an issue with links it would have come through as "Unnatural links", not "Pure Spam". Luckily I've managed to remove as many as I can, however what about social bookmarking sites where the webmasters don't bother with them, is there any chance of removal?

No a site that is propped up with spammy links and PBN links can still qualify as a "Pure Spam" manual action. The unnatural links notice typically comes more from paid links (ie obviously you are buying from someone).

It is likely your link profile rather than people taking your content or the actual quality of the content on your site.

Okay thank you for that information Gyuman82, that's installed a bit of confidence because hopefully they can see that I've worked hard to remove as many links as I can from the web and disavowed the rest (I've documented everything). If it was related to content that would be a real nightmare because it'd basically mean having to rebuild the site from scratch.

If your site has links or ads for a PBN or just anything related to selling links, your site will be classed as "pure spam" no matter if your content was written by a Nobel Peace Prize winner. You will NEVER get this site back so your best course of action is:

    1) Build another similar site
    2) Stop selling or advertising PBN or any kind of links on your site
