Rabbi Noah Muroff is a high school teacher at a private Jewish school in Connecticut, and he had quite a find in a desk he bought for just $150. on Craigslist, according to a CNN report on Monday.

The rabbi - who bought the desk on Craigslist in September of this year - discovered $98,000. inside the desk after he dismantled the desk to move it through a narrow doorway. He said he unhooked the file cabinet drawers from the desk and removed the top of the desk.

That is when he saw the sack of money behind the drawers. The money was inaccessible before he dismantled the desk.

Rabbi Muroff said that he and a friend picked up the desk from a woman named Patty who lives near New Haven, Connecticut on September 2, 2013. He remembered that the woman had told him that she purchased the desk at Staples and had assembled the desk herself. Therefore, he knew she had to have put the money in the desk.

About 20 minutes after having made the monetary discovery, the rabbi called Patty - whose last name he did not give. He said that she was absolutely speechless at first, but then explained that she had put her inheritance in the desk and forgot about it when she sold the desk to him.

Reportedly, Patty wrote a note to the rabbi which said that she doesn?t think there are many people in this world that would have done what he did by calling her and returning her money.
Needless to say, she was extremely grateful.

Muroff took his wife and four children with him to return the money the very next day.
He hopes that his good deed will send a message of honesty and integrity.

The headline should read: 'Rabbi returns $98,000 to drug dealers'

Thats why she was "speechless" trying to come up with a cover story real quick.

Excellent idea to "hide" your "inheritance" in a desk instead of investing it or just putting it in the bank.

Obviously she didn't really need the money. I don't think it would be shameful if the rabbi used the money for something worthwhile, rather than have it sit unused by someone who didn't need it.

haha i don't think she knows about the money, but if someone call me like that i will have the same excuse, "Oh i forget about my $98,000 inheritance" , maybe her husband hide the stash.

the man should contacted the police about this.

No one, that is why the person who sold it on Craigslist, who bought it from eBay a couple of weeks ago is laughing all the way to the bank.

I bet she didn't even give him a penny for "returning" it lol. He's a damn fool instead of some modern day hero. This is what you call an idiot with no common sense. Anyone in their right mind would have NEVER gave that kinda money back.

    some hunches:

    1. the dough is dirty, IE ("inheritance" held in cash rather than in a bank; "inheritance" hidden inside a desk in a single pile; a $98,000. "inheritance" is easily forgotten).

    2. the rebbe was worried the owner would come after it and so he returned it.

    3. the rebbe was worried the owner wouldn't like someone knowing they had lotsa moolah on hand. so he made sure his "good Samaritan" news went public, right to the point that he mentioned the woman's name in print.

is it just me or does anyone else think there is waaay more to this story. :D

Or maybe someone in her family is a drug dealer and hid the money in there without her knowledge of it, I'm sure that money belongs to someone who isn't gonna be to kind if he finds out it's gone.

If the rabbi was worried about not returning the money he wouldn't be recounting this tale in the first place. I'll just take the story at face value and give the rabbi his proper props. As to Patty I hope for her sake she's real old!

If I found that money I would have done the same thing too. Think about how profitable that could be! Post-tax 50k upfront costs, then when you're finding clients and people search your name, and they find these articles! Start ranking the articles and watch the money flow in!!!
