I did exactly the same thing. I had wrote an essay about it but for some reason it keeps falling foul of the moderation rules.

In short, service on the server went down over the weekend. It had ran out of disk space. Easiest remedy to the situation was to "rm -rf" the tmp folder and log folder. Due to stress of the place I was working in (50,000 members, 2,000 users on the server who did not know anything about computers and everything was my fault - oh and I was the only tech guy employed there to give support to all of these people AND build the systems AND look after them!) I forgot to actually go in to the tmp and log folders. I just ran the command in root by accident.

Rang the server people, took them 12 hours to actually restore the server from a backup. When they did, they tried to restore the 210GB backup image to a 60GB hard drive on the server - like a clown.

36 hours later everything was back up. Websites, forums, online services.

I left 12 months later because a new CEO was appointed who made it clear from the outset that she didn't like me and wanted her former company to do the work instead. It's every inch as dodgy as it sounds.

He might still be able to get back some customers but I would not say more than 30%.

They were wiped too! even the offline ones.

I guess a few hard drives on the other side of the planet are the only way this guy would have been prevented from wiping them haha.

You had no backup, may be something on Dropbox or emails? You know that's a big loss.

So he kept backups on the same server that he wiped? whats the point in having backups if you aren't going to store them offsite.

Poor guy... but seriously his customers got fucked over way more here.

How can you run a web hosting company and delete customers data like this... he is fucked. I imagine people will be suing him for years to come and he does not have a leg to stand on.

This makes me feel much better about my own issues in these regards. What a fool! Maybe it's just a ploy, and he simply is planning to steal everyone else's site that was hosted with him. It wouldn't surprise me I guess.

Is it bad that I was laughing at that picture of the laptop on fire?

I feel bad for him, but it's good that he recovered almost everything - if ePrime's link is to be believed. You do not want to be on the receiving end of 1500+ customers with deleted websites. I imagine that's like being in the way of a herd of horny Ste Fishkins with only one goat.

In all honesty I figure he should've had online records of this somewhere like excel or google docs at the least. It's funny how he only had computer copies of everything... Well let's see if he can manage whatever is left.

I have my entire PC system backed up on MEGA & OneDrive. Find your taste so this doesn't happen to you.
