I think there are 2 solutions:

    - you go to China and meet them
    - you don't go to China and take a gamble

I have a bit of experience with Chinese manufacturers, and mostly its positive. If you don't want to fly to China, you gotta ask for photos constantly, samples, more photos, more samples, before you send any money (well.. samples usually cost a bit but they generally refund you that cost once you place your main order with them)

    good luck

Actually, everything you just mentioned can be bought for $5 in China. So wouldn't trust that too much...

Your saying the site sells that without following through? I doubt that. Even if thats true its still the best way to finding a legit seller on there. And I forgot to mention the obvious one which is feedback.

had a very bad experience with that.
the supplier from China hasn't scammed me or something. but his management was awful. the supplier could disappear for a week or two. was sending not a quality products and etc.
be careful it can affect your account drastically.

Wow. Yeah, even emailing some these companies they're taking a long time and being just very inefficient.

Tempted to just go to China and meet some proper manufactures. Maybe.

Thanks for all the advice so far everyone. ;)

Update: I know this is old but yeah, I have ordered the sample using Paypal. I FINALLY found someone who didn't try to give the runaround and has excellent management skills and speaks English well. I have requested pictures to keep me updated through this whole process. Still a bit nervous but hopefully it all goes well.

What work very well is ordering using aliexpress (dot) com

It's part of alibaba and basically based on the feedback and number of orders you can weed out most scammers. Off course this is not waterproof, but until now it has always worked for me!

ipwned, the best advice I can give you is to check out a website called eto.cn. They are a company based in China, and they can do everything someone outside of China would want them to do for you. I have used them once before for a supplier I was going to use. They checked them out for me, and said we would not recommend using them as they do not seem credible to us. They are great. Different prices for different services, but they basically do it all. And, it's a lot cheaper then a trip to China. They can even do on-site inspections ,etc. Hope that helps. Good luck.

yeah the site is filled with tons of shady people. Even if they do not disappear their quality control over there is really lacking. You send them a sample cup that you want created with a digital print on it. the sample comes looking perfect. you place an order for 1k pcs but it turns out 3/4 of them are printed off or the color is not right, when you complain they just respond with things like "you only paid xxx dollars for this, what did you expect?" or "does the cup not hold water anymore?" their values are totally skewed. I would be very very careful when dealing with overseas suppliers, even if you do go out to meet them, they very well might still do the same thing.

I was able to meet someone who was american who went over to china to start his own fabric / clothing line. even when dealing with an american many of my shirts came totally messed up, small tag was sewn on a large shirt etc etc. I would just be very weary of doing business over there in the future. They dont care about long term business, they just want the money now.

I have to agree somewhat. Not all of the manufacturer's are working this way, of course, but you do have a lot of foul apple's in the cart.

Ordering a sample is basically a waste of time. The sample will be perfect, just the way you want it. If your order is of the same quality - you will find out when ( or if ) you get it.

My wife works for a company ( HR ) that is run and owned by Chinese here in the Phil's
They do a lot, and i mean a LOT, of business here. About half of the items they sell is manufactured locally ( mainly shirts ) the rest is coming in from China.
They get screwed just as often as everyone else.

I remember 1 order of 5000 pieces of puzzle cubes. The sample was perfect, as usual.

When the order came in and they checked, about 60% had the print messed up.

Especially nice when you are on a deadline for delivery with penalties imposed for every day late delivery....

Making sure you get what you actually pay for is not an easy task indeed.
