Before the forum trolls come in here, I'm kind of curious on something.

I haven't been an active poster on here for a year+ now where I used to spend a lot of time on the forum.

The internet has changed sooo much in just the past couple of years it's ridiculous.. it seems like now every one and their dog is trying to make massive amounts of money online and every one is trying to monetize every thing.

Take 2006 for example when Travis Sago introduced people to the idea of Bum Marketing.. it wasn't a new concept, but he needed a gateway to promote Wealthy Affiliate and a lot of people never thought of the idea. Bum Marketing very quickly pretty much dried up after a year or so.

Now a days: If you don't have a steady-online income already is it worth it to try to jump back into the game? Before I gave online a break, I tried doing some e-whoring and classified posting but I got nowhere.. It's just not something I'm good at I guess and even every day regular people weren't dumb enough to fall for these sites or sign up to them none the less.

    This isn't a CL/E-whore complaint thread though, it's more a curiosity post.

I haven't been here in a while and honestly I'm seeing a lot less threads pertaining to methods and making-money but now I'm seeing just a lot of people trolling each other and people raising their post count with non-sense. It's sad too because this community used to be like a smaller tight-knit family where people shared golden eggs freely and they didn't worry about some dick trying to package them up into e-books and head to other forums.

My real question: Is it worth it? trying to get back into internet marketing if you don't have money to back you up or online steady income presently? It just seems next to impossible to compete with millions of other people now-a-days.. either that or I'm just over-thinking it.

What are people's thoughts on this?

    Right ..

But .. is owning a business worth it anymore? I mean .. nowadays so many people own businesses, there's a supermarket on every corner and 65 travel agencies in every city .. it just doesn't seem that the business stuff is feasible any longer ........

But in all seriousness now - what's happened in Internet Marketing during the last few years is simply natural, and was bound to happen. Sure, in 2004 every kid and their dog could go online, do a little bit of cpa or sell a few infoproducts and rake in $10k a month with a minimal effort - nowadays, as with any other type of business, you actually need to know what you're doing and have a competitive advantage.

I'll try and keep this post shortish so here's my conclusion: no - 'making money online' (who the f invented this term anyway - do you use 'making money offline' for a travel agency ) is most definitely not as easy as it used to be. No - if you don't have a clear vision for your business, i.e. you depend on 'methods' posted on forums etc. etc. then you won't bank enough to pay your rent. Yes - internet marketing is still a very lucrative business and those who know what they do and do it good rake in quite a bit, very similarly to their offline counterparts.

P.S. For the record - no personal offence toward the OP intended in any way what so ever.

I'm going to say that it's absolutely worth it. I'm 18 just getting out of High School and through lurking this forum I was able to start a profitable website with under $5 in overhead, now pulling in $250 a month from that single project. I guess your question really is meant for the veterans, who I suppose could've been making millions before swarms of kids like me entered the game, but I can't imagine a community much better than this.

If you are new to it, it will take some time but it is certainly not dead due to too much competition or the fact that it can be hard. I'm not even remotely decent at technical things, have a bunch of sites, do a lot of article marketing and spend about 60.00 a day in advertising.

The ROI on the 60.00 a day is generally between 250.00 and 300.00 which is pretty good. My overhead is not much as I lease a small office, pay for hosting and of course pay for internet service.

I have one site that I do nothing with that generates an average of 80.00 a day that I no longer have to put any money or energy into as the search engines are pleased with what I have done with it.

This is the exact correct tact to take regarding how to answer this question.

CoreyGeer - Nice to see you again. It's still worth it. My monthly earnings have taken a monster cut recently, but I'm still plugging away.

Dive back in, and find something you can devote yourself to with a different mindset. You're not trying to make money online. You are an online marketer.

P.S. Once you start - you can't stop. Stop trying to make money, and just do it. There will ALWAYS be opportunity online. Just get good at something.

    i'd say...

if you wanted to make under $50k a year, then it's probably easier to just get an ordinary job, for most people anyway.

but if you wanted to make over $200k a year, then it's probably easier to do it through internet marketing. (simply because no company's gonna pay you that much)

i guess which path you take just depends on how ambitious you are.

If something can be easily accomplished, it probably isn't worth it.

I can't remember the exact numbers but its in the 100s of billions - I am talking about online advertising, marketing and consumer purchase revenues.

Remember you are just trying to slice the smallest piece of that pie off for yourself so I think the numbers are there, the question is can IMers last with some of the biggest monopoly companies out there always trying to shut them down. I don't know of any business where the rules change daily and there are huge multi-billion dollar companies fucking with them every day.

I'm very new to the IM world and for me it seems that the foundations are all here. You'll make next to nothing if you just replicate what's here, as by then hundreds of people have seen it and booom its saturated. My personal approach is to try and twist everything I possibly can.[like everyone here says to] I'm still yet to find my 'cash cow' but I find it all very enjoyable and it makes for a good hobby :p

Heres my opinion on the topic...

I actually like how much more compteitive it is getting. How many people come on the forum and say.. "How do I make money" Well its not easy anymore. As soon as someone finds an easy way of doing it, it gets saturated and blown out of proportion. I think a HUGE percentage of people that call themselves internet markerters don't make anything. They get discouraged and quit, because its not as easy as the ebook they read make it seem.

If your in the business and have been in the business and know your way around you have a huge competitive edge. Knowing how many people quit before they even give it a chance is actually pretty awesome. Now that its more difficult you are going to have a higher level of turn over. Even the people that used to make easy money are quitting because its more difficult now. In most cases it actually takes a little hard work. And most of the ebooks out there don't tell people that.

So I think its a good thing its more competitve, especially for the people that are willing to put fourth a little hard work. Keep choogling Corey.

@OP: Sure, there have been changes, new IM "toys' have been invented, there are more methods and techniques, etc.

But it still comes down to this (and that will never change)...

    1. Find a hungry market
    2. Have an offer (affiliate product or your own product)
    3. Build targeted lists
    4. Drive traffic to your sites

And yes, it's still worth to go the online marketing route to make some serious money. But nowadays you have to be more creative (by putting your own spins on everything you do, tweaking and twisting, etc.) to reach your financial goals.

    Hope this helps.

One of the risks of running an e-commerce business that sells tangible products imported from overseas is that when your manufacturer eventually competes online with lower prices and XR creating over 350,000 BL's = WTF! I've had to switch to brands to maintain my revenue stream and learn BH methods to stay competitve. Before it was so easy buying and selling products from overseas. All said, It's a jungle out there.

But in terms of potential, in terms of the competition, Internet is still in very early days. "Internet is 15 years old and has not had sex yet" <<Thats how young :p

Don't under-appreciate the times we are living in. Never in the history of mankind have you had such a great opportunity to make money.

I couldn't agree more with this statement. The Internet is still in its' infancy. I see niches everyday that have no competition. There are two things I see that separate a successful online marketer from one who fails. 1) Knowledge 2) Cash Flow. You have those two, the skies the limit.

Internet marketing is a lot more than promoting acai and other CPA offers from affiliate networks. Internet marketing is about marketing products through internet channels. And I'm not just talking CPA -- whether the product is info, or physical, or software, there are people out there who will find it useful. Or maybe you can sell a service over the internet. Either way, there are no limits.

As long as there is a way for you to get your product in front of another person's eyes, there is an opportunity to make money online.

If you cannot imagine at least 10 different ways to sell a product through the internet, then you belong in a cubicle or at a cash register doing a menial task over and over again.

"owning a business" does not guarantee money. it's all about what the business actually does that makes the difference.
