I've wasted alot of my time learning to produce and learning music. I've made about 200$ total off various sales eventhough I spent 8 years learning. I feel like there's no money to be made even if I were to become popular. When you see twitch / youtube channels making 8K USD a month playing videogames, it really makes me feel like "Why have I wasted all my time on this?"

Is anybody here a music producer, releasing songs or albums? Have any of you been successful in making a good amount of money? I must be missing something, or maybe only very few make big bucks off this stuff.

Which type of music do you produce? Have you ever try to upload your music on services like Soundcloud or Spotify? Did you ever try to make music for videogames or commercials?

If you start form rock bottom, it can be one of the most difficult industries to get into. Apart from talent, you should be looking forward to collaborate with people. If your music doesn't reach sizeable audience, you won't even know if it's worth pursuing or not. I assume you were focusing on YT alone.

music can be a tough industry to be in. I have a couple of friends in the industry. Its tough. You might want to look at other ways to make money in the music industry.

Since you have spent the last 8 years working and learning. Why not think of a service or info product/course you can create or offer. I'm sure you've learned a ton of helpful information in that time.

Think about creating something to help people who are new to the industry. Think of what you struggled with at the start and create something to make it easier for them.

Sometimes you'll make a lot more money selling shovels then actually digging for gold.

Definetely depends of the music genre you are into and what you produce/play. But as stated above, I also believe it can be one of the hardest industries to get into

Nah, learning is a good thing. Now you have a skillset that some can only dream of. However here is your problem: there’s multiple factors in everything you do, all goals you want to achieve. However, you only have put effort into one or two of those. From reading your post, I can deduct you want to become more popular. There’s many contributing factors to becoming popular and it is not just making music. One very obvious thing is marketing.

Yes, making money in music is entirely possible and worthwhile. My clients all do it. You just have to work on some things that you want to spend on other stuff sometimes. If you don’t, hire someone who knows what he’s doing so you can spend 100% on making music.

You could start a blog and attract traffic and even sell your tracks there. You obviously have good technical knowledge, you can review software (Protools/FL studio) and other products required to build a studio (mics, mixers, sound proofing equipment, digital/analog recording, sound cards, musical equipment etc.) the possibilities are endless. You just need to find the right keywords to focus on. Your buying guides would be a lot more authentic than most other niche sites since you have valuable insight to offer. You can also promote production courses, online music lessons, digital music downloads etc.

Just some thoughts that came to my mind from things I've seen during lockdown, maybe it will give you some ideas:

- Create your own record label (it can give you great exposure + collaborations with similar artists + extra revenues from sales)
- Sell your music on vinyl discs if this is relevant for your niche/genre
- If you're really a good producer then you can create your own course and sell it on Udemy/Youtube tutorials
- Ghostproducing : you basically focus exclusively on music production for companies, DJs, other artists, etc.
- Learn more about branding and marketing and work a lot on your own social medias (Soundcloud, Spotify, Instagram, Facebook)

EDIT: If you plan to play locally in your city/area, building a good website could be very useful. A lot of interesting themes for music producers and bands on Themeforest, you can go there and get inspired.

Good luck! ;)

I second this. The word is - collaboration. OP I hope you'll try to reach out to semi-popular and popular artists and find opportunities to collaborate with them. That way you will get exposed to their audience plus lot of experience while working with them.

I make mostly rock/metal/electronic right now. I honestly am working a job at a production company with an average salary and have a profile online with 1k subs on youtube, my songs are on spotify and itunes. I sold most of my songs on itunes so far. I tried selling t shirts and stuff before too, but I'm not popular enough lol

You guys make a lot of good points, there's alot of ways I haven't tried making money with it yet (producing for tv/ghst producing/doing tutorials) I have collabed but not with anyone popular lol

I may try to start doing gear reviews that sounds pretty neat.
