I'm about to put up an ecommerce site, and I'm wondering if I should buy a new domain for it, namely for branding purposes.

I also have a 2+ year old domain that deals with the same niche, and has just been sitting idle with 5 unique pages and adsense. It only has about 100 backlinks, and doesn't really get any Google traffic at all. For the main keyword I would be targeting, it is ranked only something like page 30+.

This aged domain is named -- keywordproduct-forsale.com which is kind of shitty for building up a legit brand name.

So, what would you recommend? New domain or old one?

I'd go for a better new domain. And use the 2 year old one as a blog to write articles and point links to the new domain

Use the new domain and make it brand-able. Honestly if you made an ecommerce site from the first domain, no one would buy from you. With an ecommerce site, trust is important.

If you are making a ecommerce site, then should you pick a relevant name that is easy to brand and easy to remember.

Don't worry about if the name have some of your product name in it, because you are going to have 1000's of products and you don't know yet what products will give you the best profit in the future.

A brand new domain and good luck with your shop.

Now a days domain age is less important for rankings. Its better to start with a new domain name with an aim of branding your website.
Here, domain age will help you very less.

Domain age or exact keyword still helps in ranking but not worth replacing brand able domain name... It may be little hard to rank but will cover long term plan... Brand name will help people to remember your site and after some time they will not need search engine to find you... Amazon and ebay still ranks for thousands or more keywords and get decent amount of traffic from search engines but they will not be dead if Google stops sending traffic to them because they are able to make brand name for them.

Long term business strategy requires more then just getting quick results... :) I guess you should have better idea by now after reading comments from every one that new brandable domain will help you more in your cause... Good Luck In getting good name and making it branable...
