I'm trying to make a map that represents the structure of SEO and online marketing. This is to help me brainstorm a game plan before I jump into the battle. So far I understand that SEO is a game within the game of advertising within the game of marketing. I have picked up some books from the library that have given me some ideas on marketing tactics that I can use for my business but I still don't have an idea of which direction that I want to sail. There are so many different routes that I can take and it just baffles my mind on which direction is best for building a solid foundation. So far I have identified a few different types of marketing games. The first is selling your marketing services to a client that develops a tangible product. I like this strategy, but I'm looking for something that can develop perpetual or passive income. I want to automate a lot of different processes and I'm trying to figure out how that works. The next game being CPA. I don't really understand much about this game. It sounds almost too easy. Essentially flood a bunch of ads onto a particular market place and hope that someone clicks on it then you earn money. But wouldn't that be considered spam? I'm also toying around with the idea of lead generation. It fascinates me. Isn't it like being a shepherd guiding sheep? You want to create a clear path for the sheep to follow and give them a few rewards on the way to the prize. The prize being a product that you promote and gain a commission from. I'm looking for crack. Something really addictive that my customers couldn't ever resist. Free is deception. The customers aren't as stupid as you might think. You can't get anything for free. It all comes at a price, the game of give or take. I'm looking for crack. It almost sounds evil. Muhahahaha.

It's almost like a rant. I want to see what other people think of my thoughts. That's all. I like input.

    Cool story bro...

On a serious note: good starting point. Just pick one thing up and run with it. You don't really need to overthink when marketing.

I get that but what exactly? For me online marketing is so hard to grasp because everything is virtual, nothing is concrete and real. Maybe I'm in the wrong business. Been reading for months and I still don't get it. From what I can tell online marketing is about grabbing as much attention as possible. For instance if you're running a website, you want to grab as many leads as possible, drive as much traffic as possible and score as many advertisements as possible. If you're doing SEO, you want to do anything and I mean anything possible to get to the top of search engine results so you can grab as much traffic as possible. Here's a thought?!? Can you sell a keyword? Sounds stupid but I may be onto something.

This is why you won't get anything done: you theorize/think too much. Just forget about all the ideas, all the thoughts, all the distractions and get to work for Christ's sake. That's the only way you'll be able to see what works. When you have real data...real results...you'll finally be able to put your ideas to action.

You said you've been reading for months and you don't get it. If that's the case...you're a liar.

Because you already have the basic understanding of how marketing works. Now you just need to pick something, anything really, and run with it. If you have money, start with PPC. If you don't have money, then start doing SEO. If you like youtube, do some youtube/cpa promotion. If you enjoy being on facebook, start with facebook.

I could go on forever, but I think you already get where I'm coming from. You're smart and you got lots of time to make mistakes. Just read the next "make money thread, (or whatever you want to do)" and start working on that method.
