My suggestion is to make people who give negative "rep" to other users visible to all. I think this will stop assholes that abuse this and give negative "rep" for nothing.

If you consistently contribute your positive rep will outweigh the negative rep. Seeing as only Jr VIPs and above can neg rep, I'd be surprised if it is abused that often.

I get the odd neg rep from time to time, usually just a random hater. No need to worry about it.

Either way, had a good day, so firing +5 your way.

If I said I was sad would you give me some? LOL :)

These threads always end up with the op's rep count going up about 12 points!

Like Meathead1234 said, that number goes up way more than it goes down!

If you feel that you have been unjustifiably neg-repped, you can ask
one of our Administrators (HaRRo, Pofecker, Clix, or Trophaeum). They
have the ability to see who neg-repped you.

However, don't bother them if there WAS a reason to neg-rep you.
Possibly, you did not know that something you said or did was
distasteful to one of the members and it prompted him/her to
    give you a neg-rep.

    Cheers! - "Wiz"

Making that visible would only encourage wars - doesn't seem like you thought that through.

Giving out negative rep anonymously allows sub-literate cowards to harrass and antagonize people consequence-free. The risk of getting some in return (aka the "war" you seem to be so concerned about) would be a real good reason to not hand out negative rep just to harass newbs for entertainment.

LOL, I got negative repped the other day, with just a stupid post comment, because I said that free money was great... There are a few that do abuse it, but its not a general thing.

And it was very obvious who did it to us, because we just refuse to do business with them... And they are petty... Im not naming names, because well, it really doesnt matter much to me.. I have a decent rep.. Now if he kept doing it over and over, I guess I would go to the mods... So to the OP, +3 rep coming from us! Because we agree with them, we are going to post it, lol :D

Either that or they lose about 10 or 12 points. It's hard to tell what's going to happen when you start complaining about getting a neg rep. If you get a comment that is flat out contrary to how you really think and you want to try clearing that up, then you might end up getting more rep because of the content in your post. If you're just bitching about how unfair neg reps are then it's kind of a crap shoot. You might win, but more likely you'll lose.

The reputation system is really more of a popularity poll than anything else. It really doesn't affect anything you do on the forum. It will affect how people deal with you, but in real life a lot of people won't deal with the unpopular people either. And just like in real life a lot of the neg popularity votes given to people are seemingly undeserved. (at least to the people getting them)

So when people make these kind of threads complaining about how injust the rep system is, it's about the equivalent of someone getting up on their barstool at a club and complaining about how unfair it is that people don't like them. Doing that in a club is more likely to make you even less popular. Actually they'd probably think a few other things about you as well.

Overall if you get a few negs on your rep it isn't going to affect your use of the forum and it doesn't take much to get some plus rep to counter it. a neg rep really doesn't mean anything more than someone didn't like what was said in a thread, or in some cases maybe someone just doesn't like you. That's just how popularity works.

Basically just pay attention to the kinds of posts people here seem to like and make more posts like that. Also pay attention to the kind of posts people seem not to like and make less posts like that. If you got a neg in some thread then that's an indication that maybe it isn't the kind of posts you want to make. Actually even if you make good posts sometimes you'll still get a neg rep. I've recieved neg rep and plus rep both for the same post before. LOL. Not everyone likes the same thing.

So, there's really no reason to revamp the rep system. Instead of freaking out because someone gives you a neg rep, just go make a post that's more likely to get you a plus rep. If you do that then you'll end up with a rep that goes up instead of down. It's really that simple.

Try clicking on the Members List link on the top menu bar sometime. When the members list comes up click on the link at the top of the Reputation column tp sort the list by rep. Look at the members in the first few pages to see who gets the most rep. Read through the posts they've made looking for the posts where they've offered help to people. Make the same kind of posts as those members and you'll probably see your rep go up as well.

    Additional Note:
It's also good to keep it straight that there's a difference between rep points and iTrader points. Lately there's apparently been a few members abusing the iTrader system which is a much more serious problem. While rep isn't really an indication of anything more than popularity, the iTrader system is something totally different. a neg rep really doesn't mean anything more than someone didn't like what was said in a thread. That's just how popularity works, online or offline. With iTrader though the score is an indication of how trustworthy you are in a deal. That value is much more important than rep points, so it should only be left when a deal has actually been agreed on. Anyone not involved in a deal should never leave iTrader points for someone at all.
So, getting some neg Reps isn't that big a deal. You really need to get over it and try making posts less likely to get them. But if you get any iTrader that was undeserved from anyone that you haven't even dealt with, then that would be something worth complaining about.

    edit-
It's also worth mentioning that once you give some Rep points to someone (plus or neg), you can't just give the same member a rep again. You actually have to give out quite a bit of rep to other members before you can give another one to the same guy again. So, even if in some cases maybe someone just doesn't like you, it's likely they'll just neg rep you the one time. If you're receiving multiple neg reps, it's very unlikely that it's coming from just one member. If that's the case then you really do need to take note of what you're doing wrong because you must be irritating more people than you think. :cool2:
