OK, first of all, this is not a sales thread. Just an idea that I thought I will put out for those who might be interested.

I was reading this thread about domain age the other day and I think most people would agree that it is pretty important.

Just to test it out, I looked up the competition for credit cards - there are about 80 Million results and the domain creditcards.com is sitting at number 1. This is where the investment opportunity comes in.

I want to narrate a small story that I read first. A school once had a few first or second graders do an assignment where they were told to think creatively and come up with drawings about life in the future. The assignments were collected and sealed up in a box that was opened 50 years later. I think I saw this in a movie or maybe read it somewhere, anyways, when the box was opened up 50 years later, people were amazed at the predictions made by these young children all those years ago. The kids had drawn airplanes, cell phones etc when the concept never even existed. That is pretty cool.

If kids can do it, who not us? Everyone is passionate about something in their life. I bet everyone has also said in one point of their life "Oh, I had thought of that idea, I wish I had done something about it".

Well, now you can. If you think something is going to become popular in the future, why not register a domain in that name. You will have to think ahead of the herd on this one though. It will work best if you think of something that you are interested in. You can also use a keyword research sort of approach to think of a few precious domain names that haven't been registered.

Try to think ahead by say about 5-10 years. I have thought about a few and have even one registered. It is a long shot but just imagine the things you could do when you are far ahead of the competition once it starts to get crazy searches.

I was once in a MBA class where they thought us about paradigm thinking. The professor asked all the students to come up with some product in the market today that will be rendered useless in the future. People came out with a lot of technology stuff but is already common knowledge that technology is replaceable very quickly. When I got my turn, I told the class that lawnmowers and other items related to maintaining a lawn will become very specialty items in the future. Instead, people will seek to install synthetic lawns and that it will replace most lawns in the future. Several people smirked and one stupidly asked what the cat would do.

That was about 4 years ago I think. If I had registered a domain artificialgrass.com and done SEO on it, I could very well be getting the bulk of the 50,000 monthly searches in the U.S today.

So, in conclusion, do some paradigm thinking and create an investment of sorts with a domain name or even a few domain names that you trust with your gut instinct. You never know, you might hit it big in the future.

    Cheers

I'll ask my young daughter I think she'll have much better ideas than me. I have the creativity of a pice of wood.

Great post though and has got me thinking which trust me is unusual :)

Well said, but it's really hard to predict what is going to become popular in future. But it is possible!

the problem is CONCEPTS are able to be thought of, but not product/brand names.

for instance, those kids drawings, K, they had portable phones. 10 bucks says no one (less one of those kids grew up and invented it) called it a "cellphone"

we might come up with an idea that becomes the next big thing, but lord knows what it will be called, which is where we run into an issue on this.

past that, lets keep in mind what a company can do if it has a copyright on a name and we own the domain...

The movie is Knowing. But the kid was predicting the end of the world, and hence that is so close now, i would probably not bother thinking about what future beholds :)

Yes, that is correct. It would be impossible to predict brand names but just take the example of creditcards.com - Market Samurai says that domain age is 13.

Credit cards became very popular in the 1970's and the Internet became popular in the 1990's. I am sure the guy who thought about registering the domain name then had a lot of foresight. There is no chance that it could have been a fluke guess. It wasn't a brand name but just a concept that he went with. It must have worked out great for him.

This plus a lot of experimenting, and every once in a while you have a hit :)
