So my sites got slammed by google's latest update . My sites were picking-up traffic but now all my money sites receive very little traffic if not at all.I checked my backlinks for one of my sites and I found 22k backlinks while G.W-T is showing 300+ only. I don't do heavy backlinking and I am mostly whitehat so the 22k is definitely not mine.

Which back links counter is more correct? I am am afraid that I am being penalized because of that one site getting hit by negative seo.

    Any thoughts?

Try other backlink checkers like ahrefs too? There might be a reason why it is showing 22k links, it might be because the link you posted got dumped into the sidebar or the footer. E.g - maybe you posted a recent comment on an article with a link. Then this recent comment will show up in some blogs' sidebar under the widget "Recent comments". So then if the blog actually has over 500-1000 posts, then that 1 link would become 500-1000 links in certain backlink checkers.

I usually use majestic, ahrefs and open site explorer. You can get a good idea if you compare all three.

I use ahrefs, pretty reliable and recently it's been absurdly fast in finding new links.

agree, ahrefs. majestic finds links mon or two later than it was built, OSE - mediocre results.

I also use ahrefs. They're really effective in building backlinks.

Agree. Too expensive, too much hype, little action.

Both of those seem to only report some of the backlinks.. If you use ahrefs.. as well it might give you a general idea of the overall links to your site. I have seen Majestic be way off.. and Ranksignal also under reports

if the links were not made by you, you should report the issue to google and delist all of the links there.
