    Hey BHW,

Yesterday, I got the confirmation mail that my youtube channel was accepted for machinima network!!! I'm extremely happy about that, because it was my nr.1 goal since I started youtube and now I made it!
There is only one problem: I'm 17 years old (turning 18 in 9 months) so i'm underage and my parents have to sign on my affiliate contract with machinima to confirm that I'm allowed to be partner with them.

    Now my question:
I would prefer not to tell my parents about this, because I'm a girl and I do gaming videos, they wouldn't understand what I'm doing, ask a million questions and give me the whole speech about how it's not safe to earn money on the internet. I don't need that.
So do they only have to sign the contract, and then they're not further involved in any ways? I can get paid by my own paypal adress..
Or do they maybe have to pay taxes for my income? Or have to do ANYTHING else for my channel?!

If any of you have experience with this, know a lot about law and contracts or have any other advice, I would be glad to hear from you.. Because I really don't want to tell them and also I'm turning 18 in 9 months already and then I can manage everything myself, there is no need to involve them now.

Thanks a lot for reading, looking forward to your advice because I really don't know what to do!

I think pretty much the agreement that they sign is saying that you're okay to do videos for them, they don't get any of your money that is yours.

Never actually heard of a network doing this before though! I didn't have to when I joined one.

Your parents have to make a paypal account and they will have to recieve the money and withdraw it to their bank account. The hard part is convincing them it is all legit! Good Luck Though. You dont have to pay any taxes as you are under 18. well unless you are earning loads of cash.

are you sure?? because there were 2 contracts I had to fill out, one was online, and it asked about my paypal adress and said that most users prefer to get paid via their paypal.. so i assumed it would go to my account :S

Congrats on the contract Josy!.. hope you bank some big money. As far as paypal goes you will need a credit card to register.. so ya the best thing is to actually explain to your parents what you are doing or just wait until your 18 and get a credit card?.. Im not from the US so I don't know how stuff works down there lol.. sorry.

I am at the moment a casual gamer but am thinking about applying for machinima.. my youtube user is xCoBrAHaZEx check out my channel if you like.

As far as Paypal goes obviously you had to lie about your age when you signed up, and many people do that and get away with it just fine. The problem I can see with that though is if your account gets limited, I'm not sure what would happen then.

As far as taxes go, if you live in the U.S., it doesn't matter how old you are, if you're making over a certain amount you have to pay taxes. I'm not 100% sure what the stipulations on that are in regards to being a student (if you are) and having a self employed income, but you can file your own taxes.

Don't let something like what your parents say bother you though. They can rabble all they want, but they'll immediately stop when they see the money in your hands. Should you decide you just want them not to know, I doubt they'll be required for anything past 'their' signature. Either way best of luck.

Do what you do with your school report cards , sign it by yourself =)) think about it, convincing them now is as good as NO, sign it by yourself, earn some $$ , if the network accepts your paypal... then rinse and repeat, if it doesn't, then you can go to your parents telling them how you have ALREADY EARNED something and you want to withdraw it, so they won't argue on " you CANT earn through the net". They'll probably never find about about the self signing thing.
PS - am a 17 yr old too and i have parents with orthodox mind so i exactly know what you're talking about. Good Luck (y)

I already have a paypal account with a credit card (had to fake the birthday for paypal :S ) and i love in germany there is a special credit card here that you can even get if you're underage

well that is true, the birth date on my paypal account is fake.. but how should they find out? i mean, is it very likely to happen?

hahaha .. yeah that's what i'm thinking as well. telling them is like 99% getting a "no" as an answer. you know how parents think, they probably want me to become a lawyer or doctor.

That is just completely wrong. Don't listen to that guy. If YOU earn the money, YOU have to pay taxes on it. But only if it passes your countries minimum earnings, which you wont just from YouTube unless you become famous. So, dont worry about it for now. The only time your money affects your parents, is sometimes the government looks at TOTAL FAMILY income for certain benefits. But again, you don't really need to worry about it. The government wont find out anyways for now, unless you need to provide Machinima with your government ID number or economy identification number.

Honestly, it isn't about you becoming a doctor or lawyer, it is just that lots of kids don't understand the problems that can come with trying to be famous on YouTube and make money. Old men can become obsessed with you and try to find you in real life. You might go to apply for a job one day, and the employer doesn't hire you because you are known on YouTube and it isn't good for the companies image.

I wouldn't recommend signing with these guys yet. I think you should keep making videos for fun and build a following, and in 1 year, if you still want to do, then go for it. The amount of money you earn right now, probably will end up being just a few dollars per month. So I know it would be a big "accomplishment" to sign with them, but I think you will regret it.

Everyone pays taxes, even if you're under 18 IF you're in the USA. I started paying taxes at my 1st job when I was 15.
