Why do so many people in many areas that are developing still and developing fast lie about the economic progress that has already been made and is projected to be made?

I can look at economic research papers, business analyst findings, business news. Reports by the local and regional governments and foreign governments. All could have the same finding that there has been alot of growth and continuing growth. Yet regular people from those areas will tell me its all a lie and pretty much make you think things are as they were 20,30,40 years ago. They also come up with that line that if you don't know live there you cannot possibly know.

I can understand if news out of country was highly restricted, and the only economic data comes from the government itself. Then yes I would not have a problem with what the people are telling me. But when it comes to something that can be researched and studied with ease it drives me crazy when the locals lie to me.

Because regular people cannot comprehend very small changes across very long time.

For example, current smartphone model on the market is much much better than iphone 1, yet people don't feel too excited by it, because they get used to it.

Now imagine very small changes (bridges, buildings gets built here and there) across decades.

Baby boomers like to say "when I was a kid, life was so much better" ... they don't realize standard of living is improving for everybody in the US, not just white population.

It's true that the gov sometimes lie, but also I have seen many times that a gov build something only to be ruined by people who later claim the gov sucks.

It would be interesting to see if there is any kind of negative impact from people claiming contrary to reality and "scaring" away people.

So, unless you're in the top quintile (1/5th), the mean hasn't really risen substantially. In other words, they weren't as poor as you think back in 65.

The difference you "feel" is due to the capital accumulation that happens over time and the related technology progression. I.e. 1965 dollars can't buy an iPhone while they can buy a then-state-of-the-art car you wouldn't dare drive today due to its huge gas consumption and general backwardness of tech.

I'm not talking about the USA, its not a "Developing" Country, I was referring to places in Eastern Europe and Asia.
