Hello guys, so about 2 weeks ago I started using adsense on a website in the weight loss niche, I have articles that target moderately high paying keywords from 2$ to up to 6$ (this is taken from keyword planner), the problem I'm facing is that my average cpc is $0.17 the highest payout for a click I got was $0.20 and that's for US traffic, I'm using a recommended ad size and there are also content related ads in the ad review center but I still get low payouts. Can anyone help me with some tips on maybe what I'm doing wrong?

Keyword planner will never give you the price you will get for CPC ads on your website.
What does represent thos $2 to $6 ? These are the max bid an advetiser is willing to pay per click on their ads.

The situation:
- Company A & B both sells products and are doing a campaign on the same keywords in adwords.
- To be able to rank the ads, both advertisers bids on keywords.
- Company A bid $0.40 CPC while company B bids $20 CPC.

The results is :
- Company B will rank higher than company A.
- Company B CPC will be around $0.41 CPC (second highest bid plus minimum increment)
- Advertiser will get a percentage of $0.41 CPC (I can recall how much, but i'ds say 60% so around $0.24CPC)

Hope you get it now.

This is one simple but powerful explanation!
Thanks, got some understanding about this too.

Thanks for explaining this, I'm aware about how bidding works but the problem is the fact that I get the same payout for any type of keywords my articles are targeting, I will get both $0.17 per click from a $2 cpc targeted article and a $6 cpc article. I also have friends which are into nearly the same niche/keywords and they were getting $0.80-$1.20 right of the bat meanwhile I'm getting only up to $0.20 per click with about 80 clicks sample.

It also depends on the authrity of your site. Adsense adds higher CPC ads to the authority sites (in this case Company A i.e. $20 ads) and lower authority sites get the CPC of Company B ($0.40).

I purchased a domain with a relatively high authority, not a new domain.

Anyone has any thoughts on what it may be? Maybe I should switch to another niche?

Use contextual targeting tool on google to get an estimate, keyword planner is for adwords ads.
