I'm a real life case example of how Google Panda and Penguin can ruin businesses and change lives forever. Lesson learned. Never put all your eggs in 1 basket. I had a real eCommerce business in the hair industry. Sites that aren't even better then mine or or don't even sell products rank higher then me now where I have been dropped to page neverland! And no I did not do any kind of bad backlinking. Then I came here for recovery help and the service I bought hurt the site even more...won't mention names. I had to permanently lay off employees, close my business location, sell my house, turn in my car, and downsize my entire life. But guess what - I survived and I'm still here and I will never give up!

So with that said - the website that was hit by google almost 2 years ago and still alive and kicking but mainly due to the fact that I have a huge repeat customer base. My traffic has dropped I say 80% over the last 2 years.

Anyway, my shopping cart is Obsolete, it's Cubecart 3. I have been wanting to upgrade and move the site to a more robust shopping cart for years. I'm tired of having to pay a coder everytime I need something fixed on it. I just want an online solution.

So I was thinking about BigCommerce, Volusion or Shopify. BigCommerce being my top choice so far based on research.

So my question is - will moving my site hurt or help it? Or should I just keep that site up - and create a brand new site and brand new url and let my customers know here is the new site? Maybe the new site will stand a better chance since not hit by google.

Don't think of it as losing everything. You simply lost the physical manifestation of it, but the mental image still remains.

You still have the power of your mind behind you, and with that you can do anything.

Sorry about your troubles OP. One thing I can agree with you on is BigCommerce. One of my main sites is hosted there and they have some good free templates.

Building a site is very easy plus their templates are SEO optimized. All you have to do is enter good descriptions and keywords.

Whew, seem like you pretty much lost it all to me. On your old site put a huge link to your new site and start over again. Clone your old site to a new domain, but be careful about using previously published content on your site. If the product description isn't written by you or an employee it needs to be re-written.

I'm sorry to hear of your problems but everytime an algo update comes up this exact type of thread comes up.

Let's be clear, Google didn't ruin you, Penguin didn't ruin you, Panda didn't ruin you.

You ruined you. Relying on Google for traffic was a bad business decision plain and simple.

This applies to all businesses both offline and online, if you have a single point of failure whether its supply chain or customers - it's only a matter of time.

Great to see you took time to build and maintain a customer base though which will see you through the rough times.

If I was in your position I would first build out the new site (personally I would use Magento) and then once its ready to go 301 the old site to the new site. I did this with a site that got hit last week and its rankings started to pop back across the last couple of days.

That doesn't mean it is fixed though - you will still need to evolve your link building practices and also make diversifying traffic sources your #1 priority. It may even serve you well to forget Google even exists during the rebuilding of traffic.

Good luck, you have had a valuable learning experience that money cannot buy :)

Nasty old men... it's a school girl, teen-ager aka jail bait!

The first thing you need to establish with Google is some trust. Renew your domain for the next 10 years and get away from the free themes, free tools and shared hosting where everyone else is. Move up to Nob Hill where the security is tight and your neighbors are Fortune 500 corporations and huge charities like Ronald McDonald House. The cost is probably less than Big Commerce too.

What mattewwoodward said is true. Relying on google traffic for a business is not the wisest thing. I'm surprised it even brought you this far.

You also mentioned it was 2 years ago. What have you done in the mean time to acquire new customers besides buying services to recover? I'm curios to know.

"Maybe the new site will stand a better chance since not hit by google." That is still putting all eggs in one basket, just a new basket.

Never put your eggs in 1 basket. Kind of the same thing happened to me though...except it's paypal which ruined my entire month.

Overall, you gotta be ready for whatever is coming at you in IM. Else, it's all about constant failing.

Thank you all for your advise! I will definitely take heed to what your all saying. And your right - no excuses on my end. I did so many things wrong. But one thing I did do right is establish a huge following and repeat and loyal customer base. So it has definitely helped alot.

I'm going to get a new domain and rebuild the site with BigCommerce - they seem to have alot of nice features and I like what I'm hearing about them so far.

Can anyone recommend a reliable SEO service for those who don't know or care to take on the task of doing SEO? I have a business to run - I don't really have time to learn SEO. That would be like telling a doctor to learn how to make the medicine as well as administer it. I want to focus on doing what I do best which is taking care of my customers and running my business.

If anyone knows of a reliable trustworthy service please let me know.

That sucks. A hard lesson learned why to not have all your eggs in one basket with Google.

As mentioned above redirect and start building multiple sites is what you should do and not give up. It happens to everyone eventually and usually makes you stronger

Why should he redirect to the new shop? Why not just keep the old shop up and take whatever business it gets until the new shop is up and established.

Diversify your links and try experimenting with Social media, maybe have a small trial run of allocated $ funds for some targeted advertising on facebook

Google is like Fortune, it gives and it takes.
But diversification is for birds. Better try and fail then be scattered all over the place and be mediocre.
