Hi, one of my biggest websites has good ranking on specific keywords (say 3-5 very good keywords and high ranking). I've been top of ranking for a long time, but it seems like some of the rankings are decreasing... My question is - how to make those keywords ranked high again??
It's a bit of a clash here... from 1 hand, I tried not to over optimize those keywords for long time, and it worked, but now it's losing touch. On the other hand, I'm losing ranking...
I can get more links from other website on those keywords, but is it the best thing to do now? isn't it over-optimizing? Any thoughts?

As this is posted in the White Hat SEO forum then I guess the official answer is to do nothing right now, good content will attract good quality inbound links over time which will improve your SEO.
If you are looking for a quick fix, you could try buying some linking from any reputable business in the Marketplace.
I have had some good short term success with Link Collider!

as I thought.. really nothing to do but getting more links. Do you think more in-bound links to those specific articles and keywords ranked higher could do the job? Is it (in-bound link) crucial for SEO?

and thanks for the info, i'll look them up!

There are a few things you can do:

    1) Make sure that the site has spot on SEO. That is #1 in this instance.
    2) Add more content that is targeting your KWs. There are a number of ways to do that and find the one that blends best for your site.
    3) Citations are your friend and reviews are friends as well with those citations.
    4) General Off site things that are common place but in a real tough situation set up a PBN and use it if the cost/return is there.

Take a look at recent information on what is most relevant for SEO ranking now (in 2014, going into '15), as things change over time. Your site might have conformed perfectly before, but now not as much. One guide:

    Code:

Linking is one obvious way, but it could be on page tweaking that improves your pages' position per the keyword. Perhaps some fresh content, or longer content that conveys authority (not just "another post about x" but "best x resources in the industry") will help.

A PBN is a private blog network; typically a handful of sites that you own that have a lot of respect in google's eyes and any links from them to a site gives the site a big hand in ranking.

For your first question, I think you are asking about citations, is that correct?
