Hello Everyone,

    I'm new here today, :).

I'm looking for some advice please,

I'm looking into starting a legal torrent site, but I'm not sure which route to choose, I was wondering which do people prefer,

    • A: No registration - just come, get and seed, or...
    • B: Register - come in, get, seed and join in with the community

Torrents would only be pre-approved / or uploaded by myself, as I will be renting a seedbox.

I thank anyone in advance for there advice / response.

    Thank You,.

Who would want to download legal content? :D You 'll have linux iso, old books, creative commons pics... but users? How are you going to attract users?

I think the best approach is to start with a niche like not very famous singers who upload their songs for free to get recognition

    just my 2cents

No offence, but yes, there are actually but only 1% users. And 99% torrents users downloads files which are illegal and not freely available on the internet. Need proof? Check this out:

    http://www.maximumpc.com/article/ne...les_downloaded_are_illegal_drm_might_be_blame

And if you are looking to start a legal site, you would needs TBs of stuff to get some good amount of traffic but if you upload just GBs of stuff and do a little promotion, you could get 10 times or even more traffic.

No offense but this will be a failure. You should probably focus on something else.

Yes I would certainly focus on the how to attract above anything else.

Certainly in the early stages of the site registration shouldn't be forced

Why torrenting, rather than a direct download? If it's freeware, it's most likely self hosted by it's creator. The niche of up and coming music artists is a good idea but you'd have a huge competition!

In response to your question I'd go for registered users, having a community is a lot better.

Not something I would personally go into since I do not think its a good niche.
But that is not the question to answer right? =)

    1. To start no registration.
    2. After you start getting some good traffic then add in more hoops for them to jump through to mine that data from them.

    All the best

Maybe you are right. You are more experienced than me in IM

But according to me, there is still scope for legit torrent sites

Even if his torrent site won't get super successful, i firmly believe that he can get some decent traffic to a legit torrent site.

Total world internet users are 2,405,518,376 according to internetworldstats

and this 1% you seem to over look is almost 20000000+ people

I am not here for a debate or something. We should accept the fact that there is so scope for everything to get successful at the internet if you are willing to put hard work and should encourage fellow members who have a innovative idea instead of trying to discourage them

    Just my 2 cents

    Cheers,

    MadMaddy ^_^

If he hosts in a country without DMCA/copyright laws then he would be legal :) or not... depends where he's from. In some countries you break the law even if you host in another jurisdiction just because the law applies to you not your server and you are not allow to spread copyrighted material. I migth be wrong as I am not a lawyer and never had much interest in this but it is how i understand it from the little i read.
