TL;DR: I don't know how to talk to wholesalers on Alibaba and Tradekey. Please help.

    More information about my situation:

Every attempt I've made to do business with a wholesaler has failed. The main reasons I've been declined have been either 1) I'm not established enough in that niche/industry or 2) my business is too small. So now I've run into a catch-22 where I need to grow my business to get wholesalers to take me seriously, but I can't get anywhere without anyone willing to sell to me. It's frustrating. I have a business tax ID and the proper paperwork that I'm willing to provide if asked. I'm professional on the phone and in email. I have money and I'm NOT asking to buy on credit. I try not to present myself as some half-assed operation, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong at this point.

Futhermore, I've found a promising product that I'm very interested in selling. The only wholesalers that I've found offering this product are foreign wholesalers off Alibaba and Tradekey. I haven't contacted them yet because I'm scared of fucking up and blowing my only chance at obtaining this product. Can someone please give me advice on how to successfully talk to foreign wholesalers on these websites? What's a tactful way to ask for a sample before committing to a big order (or is this just considered completely rude and should be skipped entirely)?

Sorry if I'm asking obvious questions, but I really don't know where else to begin or what to do at this point. I've already tried using the search function, but didn't have much luck. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

My way, is to act forthcomming and interested in long term business. (Not necessarily that you are)
Then ask for a good sample price, secure moneytransfer (refundable) and trackable mailing.

Then the rest is probably specialized into what business you are talking to :)

If you purchase overseas the product might, and probably will be a "replica", if it is you won't need a business ID,etc. The price should also be cheaper.

I agree with the others, I have on occasion purchased from alibaba before and the seller was quite easy to work with and had no problem giving me a fair price for a sample.

Yeah on Alibaba, it's casual and you don't have to have a tax ID, but depending on the size of your order you may need to deal with ports.

Alibaba is ok, most of the time the product is garbage though. But since it's out of China most of it, you don't need any business IDs or your EIN

Money talks. Put forth some cash and you will get results. I get probably 10 people a day that promise me the moon in return for a good discount on items that exceed the discount they are already being offered but never put forth a dollar. I get even more that want me to extend a line of credit and give someone $10,000 worth of inventory at wholesale price for the collateral of a cheap car or 10% or something.

You do business first, then you build a relationship. Everything else is backwards.

Also, if you are only finding wholesalers on AliBaba, then you probably aren't getting close enough to the source of goods as 99% of the people on Alibaba are middlemen claiming to be factories.

Another option is finding an inventory investor (which is what I do) who buys the inventory for you, jack the price up a little or add an additional interest rate, and holds the inventory for you while you buy it off in sections to resell. So if a factories MOQ is 10,000 pcs, the investor buys the 10,000 pcs, and you buy 2,000 pcs, sell them, then you buy the rest (8,000 pcs) and then sell those and you've made your money.

Money talks that true. But what can you do when all of them what you to shell out for a minimum order, which is always a few hundred bucks at least. Getting pretty expensive to test out products like that.

I won't be making any generalizations of who to stay away from... but depending on the category of the item, stay away from people who claim to be the factories and only want a high MOQ with individual prices that are not much lower than what you will find on the Chinese market. The cost of materials is hardly different when it comes to a small lot of materials and a large lot of materials.

If a factory claims to make 200 different plastic items (as an example) and want an MOQ, stay away. No single factory you are likely to get in contact with will have 200 molds for 200 different plastic toys. No way. For example:

This is from http://www.meinikatoys.com/ - A seller on AliBaba that claims to be a factory in Shantao. (MENICA PLASTIC TOYS CO.,LTD)

Here is one of their items they claim to manufacture. (which they do not)

If I wanted to buy that, I have to buy their MOQ which is 5 cartons per item, which in this case is $433.40 and at 15KG per item, it will cost me probably $350 to ship from them to me. They want about $29.00 per unit and I have to buy their MOQ... why on earth would you do that when you can buy each individual unit on TaoBao for $22.70 and only have to buy what is needed?

It's because they aren't a factory at all. What they are, are middle men. If I purchased from that person, from that transaction alone, they would likely make about $94 if not more (with purchasing power) without even having to touch any inventory. They just send the order(s) to the real factory and make their profit.
