Anyone have luck with this for extra site exposure?

As an example - if you sell music players, can make a post like top 5 music players avilable, or something like that.

I noticed some of these aren't so hard to rank (depending on types of products targeting). I also noticed some sites that did this in my niche wrote kind of short articles to rank for these so it may not be so hard to rank some of these.

Even if it could get a little extra exposure here and there seems worth it to me.

Typically, when you produce decent content on high-volume keywords, you will naturally rank for a ton of long-tails in the process. In short, yes, EVERYONE that has success in ranking for higher volume keywords has success in ranking for long tails.
