This 16 year old kid was responsible for a DDOS attack "so large it slowed down the internet"

The 16-year-old was detained by detectives at his home in south-west London after ?significant sums of money? were found to be ?flowing through his bank account?. Wonder what kind of blackhat shit he was into. I also wonder how much "large sums of money" is.

Yep he probably got cocky and thought that he was invincible and didn't take proper precautions to hide his tracks. You can't do a DDOS that large and expect not to get caught.

If you guys are wondering how he did it, you should start attending (or even just watching YouTube videos of) DEFCON. A few months ago I was watching a presentation given by a computer programmer who was hired to create an affiliate link jacker that people thought was a toolbar ad on. Be very careful what you download is all I can say about that.

    This attack happened in March

It exploited the DNS system, with bogus requests causing for DNS servers all over the world to send bogus DNS information to spamhaus's servers, thus overloading their actual network bandwidth.

The attack was not a normal layer7 attack the overloads server resources, and thus it caused substantial problems, it even briefly took down the london internet exchange. I think the attack was around 400Gbps at it's peak.

a DNS reflection attack doesn't take any real skill or knowledge, you just have to have a list of open DNS resolvers, which can be found all over the internet.

Attacks like this wouldnt be possible, if hosts and network admins, would just disable the DNS recursion on their DNS servers.
