Hey guys, I am screwed today. I woke up this morning and couldn't log in to my VPS, the password I always use isn't working (checked a million times). Xsserver can't log in on my VPS either, so they are saying they are going to have to reset the VPS to default.

Is there any way I can get my data before it's all wiped? Surely they've got root access there right? Is it possible to get the data?

I've got like 30 GB of stuff there that I didn't back up cos they were lists in progress... now I'm buggered!!

    Help!!

You can ask them to reboot the VPS in rescue (aka single user) mode and make a backup for you. They don't know your root password, but they don't even need it in rescue mode. Many hosts don't accept such requests, though. Not for free, at least.

Yikes, sounds like you need to move if they can't reset your password for you. Even on dedicated servers a hosting company should be able to do a password reset without loosing any data. Data=money when it comes down to it.

Hope they can figure it out for you.

    Good luck!

True, but servers don't change passwords on their own. There might be a security problem with all that where someone got into the server.

Either way - if you stay with the host, get the system reinstalled after data backup and check the files/scripts for vulnerabilities before you put them back on.

If it's also the case of crap support, move on after getting your backup (if you're lucky), but check for security issues anyway.

Thanks for the help guys, you have all been great :)

Just to repeat, to name and shame them, the company is XSSERVER.EU and I will let you guys know if they support me or not. They haven't responded so far. I guess I took it for granted that they would be able to at least get my data back, but at the moment it looks like they don't give a crap.

How can you name and shame them? Might of got rooted by something you installed
on there and now have control of the whole block.

I installed only Xrumer and SB. Hardly use SB just for PR checking. I scan weekly using clamwin, malwarebytes, and superantispyware, all updated. None of them ever finds anything. I don't download anything, just harvest, PR check, sort, text manipulation etc.

I doubt the whole block has gone otherwise they would have told me, or at least pretended to give a crap. I am pissed because I may have lost my data and they are doing nothing, that's loss of money as mentioned above. Also, for each day that goes by I don't have my VPS, it puts me further behind in my projects. And yet I am still PAYING for this service.

I've been a loyal customer of xsserver for over a year and I hardly ever ask for customer support. The time I need it the only thing they've got to say is they are gonna wipe my VPS.

30Gb and only installed SB and XRumer? Anti viruses don't stop a thing you need to monitor your processes. I'd be pissed if I lost my data, the feds took my computers
a few weeks ago I and I feel like a virgin and I'm hemorrhaging money.
Unless you get some response from support you're fucked.
    Best ask nicely.

Lol, more like scream at them nicely. I sent them 4 consecutive messages and they were about as calm as titanic when it hit the iceberg. Yes, 30 GB are lists. My VPS has 3 core, it either harvests using 1000 threads with hrefer or it filters lists for success, then it PR checks. The only thing worse than this is feds taking my computer, because you get fucked not once but twice (or however many laws they can trip you up on).

One time a fed took my computer "to check if there was any child pr0n on it". I asked why the hell would I put child pr0n on my PC. then i started to worry about the hilary duff pics i have in hidden folders (non nudes obviously, from lizzie mcguire). sigh...it could be worse...

Guys, Just a quick update: Xsserver saved my data! I have to eat my words because at the start they just didn't care, but I messaged them many times and they finally helped me.

Sure, I had to start with a blank VPS so had to install my programs again, even basic stuff like web browser, but thankfully I have got my projects and lists which is the main thing. My task today is to back it all up. I don't want to go through the panic I did yesterday, ever again.

So, props to Xsserver who came good in the end.
