I'm not used to doing local SEO and my client wants to rank for local keywords.

The problem is that he's created his own list, but when I've checked them, they receive zero search volume according to tools like SEMRush.

To make things worse he’s seen that a few of these zero search volume keywords have a map pack that includes his local “competitors”.

I put together my own list of keywords but struggled to find any “local” ones that received search volume. However, he seemed unhappy with these as he argued most people do a location search-based search when looking for his service. Yet obviously, my keyword research suggested otherwise.

As a result of this, I have the following questions:

1. If there are no “local keywords” with significant search volume in the industry is ranking for them worth the effort?

2. Is it possible that he will display for national keywords from people within a certain area based on his brick and mortar address? Or is local based on local keywords only? I’m thinking about keywords such as “Garage Near Me” as well as broader keyword such as “Garage Parts”

Brainstorm Your SiLs (“Service in Locations”):Just make a list of all the services you offer and the locations you serve… then merge them together to create a bunch of potential keywords.
