So i know this question gets asked over and over and it seems like everybody has differing opinions on it.

I was going to begin building a brand, however the competition is high, and seeing the ranking factors here: http://www.netmark.com/google-ranking-factors sort of swayed me. Is having the keyword in the domain still so heavily weighted?

ALSO - I was wondering, if I decide to go the branding route, would I want the homepage to be the brand and a separate page with brand.com/the-keyword to have the keyword in the URL?

NO. Its not very important ranking factor.

You can target your main keyword in home page, make sure your keyword mentioned on title, descreption and also in home page content. And you target your secondary keyword as brand.com/secondkeyword.
*Note : If you do this automatically when people searches for your "brandname" your site appears first "brandname.com". Also if people searches for your main keyword your home page appears brandname.com. Hope this solved your confusion.

If you want to build a brand definitely don't do EMD.

Also, having a brand-name website makes getting real links in non blackhat methods much easier.

It's a lot easier to get a link from a real website as "brand.com" than as "BestInsuranceSeattle.com," for example.

Do what you wish, oftentimes the keyword IS in the brand name too, for example Kanes Furniture is still Kanes furniture, its not an EMD but the brand also has the KW in the title. You see it all the time, Joes Pest Control, Ralphs Plumbing etc...

I would rather go for brand and have all the social network buttons/plugins along with a blog and actually interact with my users. What really matters is the real activity on your site and quality links. With this you can outrank your competitor.

emd, are a thing of the past as Google sorted this in a recent update, just brand yourself in the domain, this will also create trust in people who visit your site and like john1444 said get all the plugins and allow user interaction as , then users feel more warmth to your site as they feel as if they are involved and its not all about you, that's the trick, if you haven't built any back-links then you may need to start on that, if your interested in building back-links give me a PM on here and i will give you some tips and advice

EMD's do still rank, i own a fair few of them! :D They also make ranking on Bing/Yahoo alot easier too, a nice little perk down the road for you!

As far as branding is concerned. An EMD can be made into a brand easily. A good example was a local plumbers EMD i created where the .com, .co.uk and .net were all taken up. I wanted an EMD because it would be a doddle to rank with little effort.

After a little think. I decided to call the company "Ethical Plumbers in XXXXX" (XXXXX is the city by the way)

I then purchased the .org EMD and built a brand around the fact the plumber would always quote fairly, his van runs on clean LPG not petrol and basically bigging up his ethical credentials. Even bought a carbon neutral hosting for the site too and made an internal page about it.

So basically i turned an EMD into a brand by using the .org to my advantage.

EMD's are still useful and still rank, you just have to be a bit more creative about how you brand and build em out.

    IM all the way.
I don't have time to give a big response but I will say, that EMD's do work.
