I'm about to do local SEO for a friend for free. He owns a business and shares an office with an affiliate business. They both have the same first part of their business name and one ends in "Services" and the other ends in "Associates." They have different phone numbers, but the same address.

His affiliate is already listed in Google places and a bunch of other directory websites. Can I submit my friend's business to these directories even though they have similar names and the same address? The only difference is the last part of their names and their phone numbers. This is a weird situation and I don't want to get his website banned from some of these directories (especially Google places) for mistakenly thinking it's listed twice. What should I do?

I have about 8 local SEO clients, so I'm not a huge expert, but I know enough to be dangerous.

In my experience, I've been successful with getting multiple listings for various doctors or dentists in the same practice. For example, I have a dental client that has their clinic named BRAND DENTAL CLINIC ... I get them ranked for that, then I submit the individual dentists as listings of their own ... so by the end of the day, I've got three listings:

    - BRAND DENTAL CLINIC (links to Web site)
    - DENTIST ONE, DDS (links to places page)
    - DENTIST TWO, DDS (links to places page)

All have the same address and phone number. It's probably only a matter of time till there's a manual review and the three listings get consolidated, but for now, my client has the top three spots for "Dentist" and "Cosmetic Dentist" in their market.

Well you can try listing the 2 business separately and also add the various branches of business that are supported separately. These way you would have 2 listing each for one company name, one with the company name and the 2nd with the business they handle.

Focus all your efforts on one strong listing. Creating two with mixed info is going to do more harm than good. It will be confusing to both users and search engines and can harm your rankings.
