I had the idea to do this, then read an article that said it was a waste of time, but now I'm feeling like I should do it. On reflection, the article was written by some namby-pamby white hat stooge for G, and I'll feel pretty stupid if I lose out because I followed Ms. Goodie Two-Shoes advice.

So, my evil Black Hat brethren, should I backlink my client's Google Places listing?

You are better off making fake reviews, and STUFFING the reviews with the keywords. Backlinking for google places NEVER helped me.

build & seo the site with original content.
setup google places get your card sent, make 40 fake reviews from different ip's ,
get them on a network-yelp 3rd party type authority sites.

when your reviews show up in a couple of days, and your site starts ranking by the time your places card comes, your able to have Big g already spider the reviews and your places page starts to excell.
try it. fast ranking= 65 backlinks a week.
all positive and from authoritive sites

brand new site gets renking within 1-2 weeks or sooner.
hope it help you as much as it helps me!!

ps.s, this will help you pimp your places page

If I am not wrong citation cites like yelp are kinda like backlinks. There are many "quality signals" google looks for when ranking you. You should try to send google as many quality signals as possible which includes backlinks.

Well, you can be as evil a black-hatter as you like, but backlinking your client's Google Places listing is a complete waste of time. You're better of optimizing the listing in other ways; ask the client for customer reviews, build citations, etc. There are no real short-cuts with Google Places, G is constantly tweaking, so you gotta' be on your toes...

We use social signals to promote local places. Helps a lot.
Also, what other citation directories are you listed in?
