I'm simply amazed by Google. Every time I search for something local on Google I just want to punch my cell phone / computer.
For example, you looking to get a haircut in Santa Monica? Keyword "haircut santa monica", 110 exact searches
Well let's type that in into Google (right) and Bing (left) (talk about bing it on challenge):
bing.jpggoogle.jpg

Look Google, if I wanted to see YELP listings I'd go to YELP. Fine, you have a hard on for yelp, well put 1-2 yelp listings, not 10+ ....I actually like to go to a business website from time to time and check out pictures and not browse YELP and Yellow Pages all day when I search for something local.

Great user experience dumbasses (Cutts, especially you with your BS talk about update where you said that "sites with more then 1 result on the 1st page will now merge into just 1" ) a 3 year old can write a better algo.

Now I understand your algo isn't perfect, but it's a complete sh*t now ...

Just type in anything:
hair salon santa monica - first 4 is YELP
hair salon los angeles - again, first 4 is YELP + 3 YELLOW PAGES LISTINGS

Let's switch it up and type in:
locksmith los angeles - oh, SURPRISEEEEEE, first 4 is YELP
plumber los angeles - F*cking YELP AGAIN in top 2 and Yellowpages #3?

So, you know what? IF I EVER DECIDE TO ADVERTISE LOCALLY I'LL JUST SKIP GOOGLE MAPS, AND GO TO YELP AND YELLOWPAGES ....

Same thing is happening in other niches. In travel you get two or three sites in 70% of results..... I've been saying Google looks like Overture, for all practical purposes those look like paid listings by these big brands....

I'm sure Matt Cutts will read your thread :p

He probably will:

Even after changing my location to Santa Monica, CA I saw a bunch of Yelp listings before the local places...ridiculous.

One of my Irish sites. Optimised geographically for Ireland, a .ie domain. Is now ranking no5 in New Zealand......I could'nt make this shit up !

Seems like Google is going to shit now. I saw a thread the other day about a member here making damn good money by not even focusing on Google. Even though I am ranking for some terms, I may make a test transition. I'd suggest some of you do the same. A test transition, that is.

Yeah this is a major issue for me too (i live in the LA area)

I have actually demoted myself to using bing for local results. on Google, (cityname) dentist for example, top 3 results for my locality is all yelp. 4th is a PURE SAPE site (lol) then its the local 7 pack. Then full of yellow pages crap.

Weaker local business's such as Tailor, I have noticed got hit even harder. First 6 results for _____ trailor returns ALL Yelp etc Then its the local 7 pack. Then yellow pages, superpages, citysearch.

How annoying. Especially since we all know Yelp's extortion tactics when it comes to local business's. It seems like if you don't pay off Yelp, you won't be be able to rank for local keywords on Google. Lol

No need to demote yourself in this case. Google adjusts itself as people get more Internet savvy. When I need a dentist I just modify my search a bit:

Code:
dentist in los angeles -site:yelp.com -site:yellowpages.com -site:whitepages.com -site:mattcutts.com

On a more serious note. Local results are not the only Google's problem. Long tail is what bothers me most (not as an internet marketer, but as a user). They doing the classical mistake of trying to guess what I wanted to say, instead just searching for what I asked. As expected, they guess it wrong 9 times out of 10.

Same in the UK, people are looking for businesses WITHOUT having to go through a directory, (thus saving several clicks in the process). Hey I gained from this penguin 2.1 but for local searches it's a joke. It's not yelp, it is directories in general, flooding the first page. I doubt this will drive adwords usage up, but no doubt this is the plan. It is possible to defy this insanity I am doing it just now but to be honest people will look in the local paper instead soon.

Bing, well if you have an emd , well done you have #1 in bing. It's sad but if you do local, get into local marketing , then you don't need google rankings. Most small businesses have been spoon fed they need to rank on G, (by people like us!!) time to switch their thinking. It'll take time but it is a whole new ball game, (read MONEY). I don't really bother with what google does, I adapt. I agree local terms are looking very poor. I'm sure yelp etc saw G ok for this update. A searcher wants a payday not news and reviews on one, a searcher wants an electrician not to have to trawl through 3-4 clicks to find one then go back and repeat. If I wanted ASK search engine results I'd go there no google. Anyway continue your battle with spam by all means but let people find what they are looking for without having to click 3-4 times.

Mr Cutts , turn the light off when you leave G, you will be the last out !
