Does anyone have any significant data on whether same-country hosting actually makes any difference for ranking on that-country G?

I have plenty of my own evidence to the contrary, but, I wonder if I would make my life a little easier by having same country hosting?...

Again - I've seen plenty of speculation, but I'm really looking for empirical data :)

I don't have any scientific data but with a same country server, you'd more than likely see faster page loads, quicker dns lookups, hopefully less bounce rates, etc which certainly won't do you any harm on your rankings!

Yeah all of those things are good... but assuming all else is equal, I wonder.... :)

Same hosting country nails it.. Don't listen to anyone saying otherwise. I have done it, been doing it and still do it..

Have you compared same country vs different country? Is there a measurable difference?

As I said in the OP, I still take out plenty of top rankings, however, I wonder if I'm making things harder than they need by, by having different country hosting.

The only difference I could see is if the server speed is faster it could improve your conversions or lessen
your bounce rate of incoming traffic, but I do not see the benefit overall. I mean it is not like the hosting company
you choose will boost your PR.

Its important only in regards to DNS and Page load times. With Cloud servers from Azure / AWS you can be in certian regions but cannot target a specific country.

More important is the structure of your code, tld, and the sites that link back to you. For example say you are hosting in Azure in Europe (somewhere in dublin), but are targeting italian customers with your site. If your site has an it domain extension, italian charset, and is written in italian, the it will be considered and italian site.
