I have a site that promotes our software product. No matter how hard I try I can't get the bloody thing to rank. I have built pages with ref links to the site on the following platforms :

    Squidoo
    Pubarticles
    Yahoo Answers
    Facebook

    What am I doing wrong?

I would recommend to also advertise your software on the forums that have targeted visitors to your software. That way you'll also get conversation going about your software, and once people will start talking about your program your traffic will go up.

squidoo, yahoo answers, facebook, etc..; these are all n0f0ll0w sites, so no link juice. try to get d0f0ll0w links, from friendly websites, guest posting, social bookmarking, directories, etc.. those should help your rankings. N0follow is also important to balance out your backlink profile and can sometimes bring referral traffic but will not have any effect on your rankings.

You can also try article marketing, blog commenting, forum posting, Q & A sites. There are gazillion ways to gain traffic, don't stick with the things you know. Learn and adapt! Good luck!

I don't know why so many people attempt to do things themselves and when they fail don't hire someone who's capable instead...

It's fine to learn and all, but as a software vendor, how much time to you have to sit around and waste while your competitors walk right past you.

    ---

As for what you're doing wrong, you're targeting sites that don't give you much if any value, you need to focus your attention on gaining high quality, relevant links that are d0f0ll0w.

Those sites are all great sites for links. You need both n0follow and d0follow links. You just need more of them, way more links.
