I just thought I would share my frustration being that it seems it only happens to me (In the past I've had other exact match domains get #1 after getting only 1 backlink). A few weeks ago I registered an exact match domain for a keyword I was targeting. It was indexed in G overnight and in the #1 position, but 5 minutes later it went to #5, then #9, then on the 3rd page.

So I thought WTF? And I started to build backlinks.

I now have over 350 backlinks all with the anchor text targeting the keyword for the domain and I can't seem to get passed page 2. These are a mixture of comments, articles, and profiles; and just about all are indexed.

It seems I am always a day late and a dollar short when it comes to changes in the way G ranks. Has anyone else experienced this phenomenon?

EMD is an added advantage, but you can't always expect a EMD site to rank first page.
What about the competition in first page?

First page competition is practically zilch. It is full of affiliates who have maybe 10 or so links with the targeted anchor text, and of course the merchant is on top.

10 backlinks to their money site doesn't mean sh***. They could have another 1k pointing to each of those backlinks and another 1k to each of those backlinks. Energize your backlinks or as they say "puch linkjuice".

So when "energizing" the backlinks, are you talking about comments and profiles, as well as web 2.0/articles? If so, is it ideal for anchor text to be used to juice them up or are we looking at quantity for the tier 1 backlinks?

Quantity is never really the way forward. You should only be getting involved in backlink quantity pissing contests when everyone else in the top 10 for your target have a huge number of backlinks.

Agreed. Quality > Quantity every time. But don't take it from me, experiment yourself and see how quality high PR links win over shitty Xrumer blasts every time.

Thanks guys, I understand the difference between quality vs quantity, but I'm talking about the backlinks to my (tier 1) backlinks.

Is it better to have, say 10 tier 1 backlinks energized by 1000 tier 2 backlinks? If so, would the tier 2 backlinks need to utilize the anchor text I'm trying to rank my money site for, or leave it up to the tier 1 backlinks for the anchor text? So it would look like this:

1000xTier2[Comments/Profiles] (random anchor text/names from comments) ---> 10xTier1[Web 2.0] (keyword in anchor text) ---> Money Site

Looks like you may need the benefit of some time - don't forget that initial popularity will wein quickly (as seems to have occured here) given G is showing fresh results. You mentioned your rankings were 3 weeks ago and overnight on page 1? What happened following this period where is the site ranked now?

I have fresh results using the techniques explained above re the links to tier 2 platforms and can confirm it works very well indeed. Your question around the anchor texts to use into the tier 2 sites - I tend to base my tier 2 sites around the same niche and therefore the anchor texts will also be closely related to the final money site anchors.

It happens all the time to me, but it's just temporary. After a month, a month and half you'll start climbing the SERPs and only then you'll know if you did it right enough.

It's some kind of "quarantine" a new domain go through in its early stages, I think, but nothing to be concerned about, just a rule of the game: wait.

If you ranked a site successfully in the past and you think you have a cerain degree of kno2ledge just build backlinks and don't pay too much attention to the immediate results. With no competition and an EMD you should be good with near-to-zero efforts (it's always good though to throw a few backlinks at it).

In other words, calm down, be confident and when you are done with your site development and linkbuilding, focus on a new project and don't lose your life staring at SERPs waiting for the breaktrough.

Yeah that's what I'm hoping. The site was sitting on the first position overnight, then every so often when I would recheck, it would jump down a couple more spots. As of right now, it has been sitting at position #14 for the last 2 days.

Thanks for the advice regarding the tier 2 sites. That is one thing I haven't done is actually make other web 2.0 properties a tier 2. I saw a thread a while ago that explained in more detail about the different structures for the backlinks, but from what I gather now, it should look like this:

    Tier3(Comment/Profile spam) ---> Tier2(Web 2.0 with keyword anchor text) ---> Tier1(Web 2.0 with keyword anchor text) ---> Money site
