A few days ago I really started noticing how so many ads I see during the commercial breaks are not relevent to me. And with the rise of smart tv's and the already high amount of tablets and computers it seems that streaming over the internet would be a common sense thing to do in addition to the Over the Air Broadcasts. As they could make the ads very targeted to the person instead of general information from Nielsen which is far from accurate.

Under the current system the ads are far from accurate compared to a system like Facebook or Adsense Ads.
Ads targeting a different gender, martial status, age, income of the person watching.
Ads promoting products not possible to use in the area(such as comcast cable ads in a cox cable area)

Isn't this what HBO go is? If not, I know they are going to be selling online stream service soon for the channel. It has no commercial breaks as is.

Side plug: AMC, HBO, and Showtime are great channels and the only ones that I can actually stand watching shows from these days! Highly recommend them.

Live streaming has been around for years.

I haven't watched OTA TV for months - these days my consumption is either on-demand or live streaming.

Targeting is just a buzzword atm. There is some targeting, but its as far from accurate as the TV ads.

For example, I play animation videos on YouTube for the child to watch. Sometimes I have to press that "skip" button, and the parts of the ads I see are not relevant for myself, my wife or the child.

There are only a handfull that do it and those are for people that pay for a subscription, so many of the free ota networks don't use it.

The technology is already in place and it's for the tv networks to adapt it. They charge because streaming requires internet and internet bandwidth and the infrastructure won't be so cheap for that scale.

although it's a different approach than what you're asking, but Google is experimenting with more targeted, personalized ads on TV using the big-data collected on the internet and who does have more data about US than them? basically Google AdSense/AdWords comes to TV, it's available in Kansas City for Google Fiber subscribers now

they not only can show local ads, but they can show ads relevant to your interests, gender, age, income etc.

it's welcomed by advertisers too, because they don't pay a flat rate, but they pay after served ads only, of course they can set a budget and Fiber subscribers can opt out

    Code:

I think that something like that or similar would help to save alot of tv series that get "screwed over" because of the Nielsen System and the broad untargeted ads.

With the rise of Android, Chromecast etc.. Advertising and interest is at an all time high.

Illegal streaming solutions are popping up everywhere because of how easily accessible pay TV channels are for all ages. Why pay £45 p/m for Sky when you can get the same channels for £30 for the year HD with On Demand Movies as well?!
