We all know that linking to authority and relevant to your niche websites may help your rankings. I have some thoughts (and questions) I want to share with you.

My Question: How many are too many?

I mean, if two links to some good sites may help, what about ten? Is the SEO benefit good enough to balance the "juice" leakage?

    My Idea...

I am thinking about keeping all my outbound links to authority sites in my blog posts and remove everything in my review-money pages.

This way, my site in overall seems legitimate and trusted, and the same time my money pages keep their... juice.

    What do you think?

Make them nofollow, No need to link authority sites unnecessarily, link them if its necessary. Link to your own pages.

What about the SEO benefits of linking to authority sites? If you nofollow them, I think you just lose the extra points.

So, I had some work to do!
    • I checked the rankings of a page which was always on #1 place found that in September dropped to #2 and stayed there.
    • I checked on web.archive for differences in outbound links "before" and "after" September.
Note: I have pushed a lot that page to make it rank No1 again, but I had no luck.

    Results!

The page had six external do-follow links and was No1. After made it 15 external, dropped and stayed to No2..!

Maybe it is a coincidence. I will remove links and check again in a month or so.

Another note: My website is way better than my competitor's. The only difference is in external links on money page. I want to see the results after the changes. I will go with only 2-3 links and see.

Only leave followed links to non competing web pages, and only if you have to.

Nofollow basically does take an equal cut of the link juice, but it doesn't pass anything to the website... having links to authority sites can and does help IMO, I have done this change several times. Every time I nofollow all the links on a resource page of mine, the ranks for long tails and keywords I am targeting drops within 2-3 months.
