I have access to a PR5 forum. The links are all "follow".

There are maybe 100K threads (pages) on the forum, and I can post links in a thread.
But individual threads have PR0 (it's just the root that is PR5).

How should I use this forum most effectively?

Is the value in anchoring my links? Or will I get good PR out of it too?

Depends on how many posts you have on that forum. If it is a signature link and you have 1000s of posts then it may not be a great idea to get anchor text links to your money site. It is never appreciated to post links within posts, it will definitely get deleted at some point of time. If it is a profile link from your profile of the forum, then it may be worth something, but nothing great to speak about.

Here is what I do, I put a link to the root domain in my bio, and also one in my signature.. Now some forums will only let you use a signature after you have a certain number of posts. You should aim to engage with the forum itself, so assuming that you are searching for forums in your niche, you should already have a few things that you can talk about with people there and generate discussion.

For instance, let us say I have a client who retails suitcases. I would look for forums that focus on travel. Then I would start by introducing myself as somebody who is interested in the topic. I would look for some of the recent threads and comment or ask questions there. I would also start my own thread where I ask a general question, such as: "what is your biggest pet peeve about travel?" and it is at that point that I would make my signature live, but I would probably use a category page for the link rather than the main page. Then I would leave the site alone.
