How are you guys getting link popularity solved?

There are 3 things to ranking well, as I see it...

1. PageRank

2. Relevancy

3. Link Popularity

I was thinking on how to get massive links to my site... I need about 10,000 of these bad boys to beat out my competitor.

Maybe article marketing? Submit 100 articles x 100 directories...

That's all I can think of, - please keep in mind I am building this site for long term purposes, not just a quick buck.

What do you all advise?

There are a billion ways to get links, from white hat to black and everything inbetween. Start searching.

PageRank is not your primary concern unless you are selling links, getting massive amounts of links has to happen naturally otherwise your site will get flagged by most search engines

Well, you're running on at least one pretty major logical fallacy; just because your competitor has 10,000 inbound links DOES NOT mean that you need 10,000 to compete with them. In fact, in most cases a relatively small number of high quality links will be worth far, far more than 10,000 low quality links from link exchanges or article directories.

If you're attempting to develop a long term sustainable source of income, you'll want to focus on creating the kind of quality content that people are actually interested in. Once you've got a "link bed" of quality, inbound, non-spam links, you can begin to look into spammier techniques to boost your rankings.

EDIT:
PageRank is not your primary concern unless you are selling links, getting massive amounts of links has to happen naturally otherwise your site will get flagged by most search engines
I completely agree with your first statement, but I think it might be helpful to clarify your second statement. Sometimes getting a massive amount of links DOES happen naturally, but they will generally be from a wide variety of different sites with a wide variety of different qualities. 1,000 new inbound links overnight of the same format, surrounded contextually by the same HTML and language will cause flags for sure.
