i unplug the backup drive when i'm not using it.

probably powering it up and down reduces its like anyway:)

I back up all of my data using livedrive - I have briefcase, so my data is synced in real time between my work computer, my laptop and livedrive servers.

my briefcase has 2TB of storage, and they keep 10 revisions of every file I have on there.

It has been my experience that leaving a drive on all day actually makes it last longer than turning them on and off. In fact most crashes happen at powerup, for some reason.

I got a nice backup plan recently - free, unlimited storage, high upload speed, cloud storage, no time limits. US servers, encrypted, secure and backed up by the government.

if it's not plugged in, there will be fewer powerups.

Im sure its something to do with temperature change being a big stress for components - so the heat change on power up/down decreases their life.

also the general rule with backups is to expected the most unlikely scenario to occur !

Since my hard disk media damaged 3 Years ago, I always store the backup of necessary files and documents to dropbox, Google drive & ofcourse handy usb.. heheh Seriously loosing your files and data is big pain to recovery from dead hard drive. I remember it cost me 3 times more than the actual amount of hard drive lol. and Even it recovered only 25 to 30% data.
