I have a local client with a PR 3 domain.
The site doensn't have much links but in initial on page a few of the subpages made front page with no link building.
Some of the KWs are more competitive.

My previous experiences with various local clients in different niches were:
    1. order home page links for monthly service about 20-40 links
    2. trackbacks with a combination of do/not follow

all going to the home page.

To my surprise almost 80% of the subpages made front page with no additional link building.
(yey to me for great on page :)

    ____________\

    New scenario:
With this client in the security niche after initial optimization, 3 of the least competitive KWs in subpages are already front page.
Remaining subpages are in pages 3-8 of SERP

    QUESTION:
do I continue building expensive backlinks to the front page?
I will trackback the subpage as it wont cost me anything but a bit of time of course.

OR - should I build a link building campaign and focus on each landing page individually.
the intitle: for all the kws are less than 2K.

lets share advice and I will be happy to test and report so we can duplicate for local niche markets. They are great source of income, least work and steady pay.

If I can answer any questions feel free to ask or PM me.

Always worth hitting your deep pages with a few links, gives the site a more natural looking profile. It could be that this is a more competitive niche than your previous sites. Are all the landing pages accessible from the homepage?

First thing I would want to know is if you have all of what I call "the free stuff". G+Local, Bing, Yahoo, Yelp, Manta, YP.com, etc.... Have you got your client listed on every single local citation & directory? Then reviews need to drip in. Based on what I'm looking at, the number of reviews weighs heavily on ranking within the Local directories.

    hi guys,
being the kws are all over the nation citations dont really work.
    la, miami, huston nyc....

I have to go fully organic pages.
the pages are accessible from the front page.
most of the pages are holding on page 4 of serp right now.
worth case scenario i would have to pump them up with some juicy expensive links.

what are some of the hot links now days you would recommend aside from home page links?

    How's your internal linking doing?

Might want to employ some Amazon or Wikipedia internal linking structure. Notice how they easily rank their pages for the SAME keyword with minimal backlinks.

Does he have locations in all those cities? If so, citations could help. If not then pick and address near the center of each city and put in on the landing page. Drop a kml file and hcard on there. It sends local signals and will help with the local keyword.

Go with some HQ press releases. There you can place links to those inner pages, which has helped a lot with my website's rankings and you'll also get some direct traffic because many of those HQ press releases gets a lot of traffic from G.
