Let's say your domain name is sports.com but the keyword you want to promote is "baseball"

You have an article at sports.com/baseball with lots of the keyword "baseball"

What link would you promote when you're doing backlinks - sports.com or sports.com/baseball?

Maybe use Sport-baseball as anchor text.
But it really depends if you want your baseball page to rank use it as the url of the anchor text. Otherwise use sports.com
