Link Building is not effective as people think

Why do people keep fighting over links vs content? You need BOTH...

I'll take the car metaphor again: Arguing over links vs content is like arguing over if you need a steering wheel or an engine to drive a car. You need both.

And then it depends on your niche. Super easy keyword with your competitors ranking with 300 word non-optimized article and barely any links? Yeah, you can probably rank without links with a 2,500 word article. Trying to rank for "personal loans" with only quality content? Good luck.

There's too many variables. Your test won't prove anything, you need several sites for the same keywords/niche to give it a reasonable go.

As other have said, you weren't testing the exact same thing so the results would of course vary as even the niches are different.

Your second site could potentially have 10 times the impression it's getting when you build links. Since you already have some without.

Anyway, I'm more interested in your method of cold emailing manufacturers and building relationships. Were you able to get a good number of links this way? Seems there is not a lot of discussion regarding getting links from manufacturers to Amazon affiliate sites so that would be a good method to learn.
 
I think it depends on the niche because some words are very competitive. The best thing is to have some good texts and some links also good. I think that only with text does not position

I don't know of a single experiment where links vs quality content was tested parallel to one another. I.e make a site with mediocre content and load it with links vs quality content with no back links.

Website 1: Azon product reviews. I have about 25k words worth of articles that I wrote. Note that I never purchase the products so the content is pretty flimsy. I don't provide additional value but that's not necessarily bad since my competitors clearly don't either.

I bought several link packages on BHW and even have a couple whitehat links -- which was a lot of work. For white hat practice, I would email manufacturers and build a relationship with their marketing director.

Also I have a guy from Silicon Valley who is pointing his relevant expired domains to my site.

Total Backlinks: ~150

Clicks from Google (Based on GSC): 11

Impressions: 992

Total Time: 9 months

Website 2: Info Product Reviews. I actually asked for review copies or opted in for a free trial before writing every review. If I couldn't get the product, I didn't review it. I skyped product owners to build relationships.

Words: 20k

Articles: 10

Total Backlinks: 0

Clicks from Google (Based on GSC): 60

Impressions: 3820

Total Time: 4 months

have you tried tiny DOT cc /freelinks ? at least its free
 
Internet is made of links. They'll never go.
 
When you do an experiment you need to keep everything the same except for one factor.
You changed too many factors which makes this experiment not effective.
 
As per my view human readable content and similar back-links can help a website in ranking sites on SERP.
