I am writing this thread for an honest response to how everyone (1) lives their life, (2) what percentage of their time is spent with black hat vs white hat, (3) how much they make on average month from "Online Marketing" (4) how many years have they been "Online Marketing" and (5) whether you have a college degree.

Before people get too invested in a profession they typically ask their senior work partners for their advice. This is what I am doing right now. By example, I thought I would kick this thread off.

    1) Lifestyle:

For the last 2 years I have worked 50-60 hour/per week in my day job while building up a side ecommerce site up from the ground that has taken up another 10-20 hours per/week of my time. In total, I've been working 60-80 hour weeks.

In 5 months, I will quit my advertising job in San Francisco and move to Argentina to for 3 months, Bolivia for a month, then Peru for another month. After this I'll go back to California for a month, then off the either Eastern Europe of South East Asia for some more country hoping. You only live once, and lets face it, how many people do you know that have a mobile work/income source that allows this type of vagabond jet-setting lifestyle?

My influencers include people like Tynan (dot) net , 4 Hour Work Week (actually got to meet Tim Ferriss last night) and Viperchill (dot) com and Seth Godin - All great blog lifestyle/marketing resources.

    2) Percentage of White Hat vs. Black Hat:

In my e-commerce site, I would say I spend about 80% white hat with 20% social media black hating.

    3) Online Income

I am bringing in roughly 400.00 in profit a month from my e-commerce website. I am hoping to expand on it when I have more time in 5 months.

    4) Years

I've been doing online marketing for two years. (day job mostly.. very little blackhat)

    5) College Degree

    Yes, University of California

Hopefully, this will shed light on the benefits and drawbacks of choosing independent online marketing as a life pursuit. I think the results here will be very interesting. Thanks in advance for everyone's responses!!!

My day job is about 50 hours a week. I have 3 college degrees (bachelors, masters and doctorate) and spend around 15 hours/week on IM. I'm around 50/50 BH/WH.

Nope, I am just trying to cut through some of the BS and see what I am potentially working towards. We all decide or own path, but I would like to see what other people's paths look like within the Black Hat community.

    1) Lifestyle:

Left my old job and just make money online. Spend a good amount of time with white hat marketers as friends. They make me laugh.

Rest of time is spent with non geek friends and girlfriend. She is surprisingly hot being I'm at best a charming nerd.

My influencers include people like Tynan (dot) net , 4 Hour Work Week (actually got to meet Tim Ferriss last night) and Viperchill (dot) com and Seth Godin - All great blog lifestyle/marketing resources.

    2) Percentage of White Hat vs. Black Hat:

    Probably according to google 100%.

On a more lenient scale 20% white hat,
    30% grey
    40% black
    10% jet / abyss black

    3) Online Income

It varies. New projects are killing. Time will tell this holiday season.
Spending more of rev on growing and outsourcing.

    4) Years

    4 years of online marketing

    5) College Degree

Yes, Well known school. Ok Cs department. degree in computer networks

    1) 40-50 hours a week at day job - technical sales. Also started and am president of a small corporation (online niche) for which I am IM'ing - 10-15 hrs a week. I built the site from the ground up and have plans to get into other similar niches if I can find them once I build solid IM methods and better understand my opportunities and markets. All ventures meant to be long term.

    2) White Hat - 70%, Grey Hat 25%, Black Hat 5% - but these numbers are shifting a bit to the darker side :). I just have to be careful since my ventures must hold up for longevity. I error on the side of caution.

    3) $1000 per month give or take. I could see this expanding to $10,000 per month if I can get all my competitive keywords to the No.5 position or higher plus longevity of repeat customers.

    4) Years of online marketing - 3. Mostly white hat up until lately.

    5) Purdue University - BS in Engineering

Lifestyle : Small crappy student room in center of town. It's awesome though, too much tang, drugs and parties around me to leave ;) I think even if I was making 10x what I do now, I would still escape taxed and just live here, ha! :D

Time in IM : About 8 months now, had 1 very successful site that I didn't monetize at all because I was still a noob. At the moment I probably make anywhere between 1-3$ a day. If I threw in article writing, which I am quite proficient in, I could make about 20$, but I am still too lazy. I only recently quit my job/study to pursue some serious hardcore blackhat IM.

Like the topic starter, I will move to south-east asia for 5 months at the beginning of January. I am -JUST- making enough at the moment to live a nice backpackers-life there. Hope to find some nice beach-spots with internet somewhere that will let me wake up early, get some hard work in (its strange, but I always seem to be able to study/work better when I am abroad) and then relax at night.

    College degree :
No, I have tried three different BA's at university, all of them sucked and I lost interest after about 6 months :( Thinking of something like marketing/communication now that I am busy on the internet the whole day...

    Great thread!

Lifestyle: 20 hour a week job as Technician (handy being in front of PC in work for IMing)

How long: 2 years. White hat up until 3-4 months ago. In fact i had no clue what SEO was until about 6 months ago. 100% hobby until then

Money: Averaging about $400 a week. Was $150 until i turned to blackhat for a boost. I had a great foundation already

Degree: Nada. I believe initiative is all that matters. I put myself in a situation where i work 20 easy hours and earn a nice few $$$.

Lifestyle: Full time internet marketer, 99% white hat.

Income: Pretty good, could be better (working hard on it).

Years in IM: A little over a year.

Degree: Yes, business management - though my personal opinion is that education is irrelevant when it comes to online business.

I´m 23. Make about $40 a day mixing flipping and adsense. 50/50 wh/bh. High school. I´m scaling the business so the revenue should go up as well. Been doing IM for 4 months now.

    (1) lifestyle: Full time grad school student. No job.

    (2) BH vs WH: Started my main site with BH techniques working with social media now it's all white hat

    (3) $$$: Since monetizing my main site about 4 months ago my best month so far has been $1400+. Worse month was last month at $900+. Guess my average as of now is around $1100+

    (4) Years: Tough to answer. Been online for 15 years now. Have tried on an off to make money with no success for the past 2 years. Started actually making money 4 months ago. So I guess my online marketing "career" officially started 4 months ago hahaha.

    (5) Degrees: Have a degree in International Relations (worthless) and am currently pursuing a degree in International Law.
