Alright so I got my hands on this utility which people people will google for and find on my site.

Problem is, I'm not sure which way I want to monetize it.

Below are the possibilities that i've considered so far, and my basic assumption about them.

    1. Make mirror(s) to download site(s)

We've all obviously seen this done plenty, with sites like Rapidshare, Hotfile, Mediafire, etc. But the question is, is there actually any money in this? (Especially if i'm really only going to be offering one utility on this one site)

    2. Offer the download from my site, create spiffy download page with tons of adds like you see so often... example:
    Code:
    hxxp://www.oldversion.com/download_DivX_6.6.2.html
I see this done everywhere, so it must convert pretty well. I'm leaning towards this, as it honestly feels like it's the most legit and has the most potential for making some money, however where do people get these adds which lend themselves so perfectly to miss-clicks on a download page??

    3. Add content blocker and force visitors to fill out survey before downloading

This just seems like I'd end up feeling like a douche and pissing off everyone while i'm at it... although i'll bet this nets the most money.

If anyone has any experience with any of these methods and has any input as to the amount earned, reaction from users, etc... ANYTHING to help me figure out what one the best would be, i'd appreciate it.

    Thanks!

I think you should use combination of few methods to monetize your download.

1)When they come to download page they must do the offer/survery/wootever
2)when they finish a survey they see a download page, but page should have some banner ads from adsense(extra revenue)
3)Implement an pop-under for your download page,so whoever clicks he gets a pop-under ad that doesnt piss em off
4)pack your download in one EXE file along with pay per install application and potentionally some adware

I think combination of these 4 methods could bring your hundreds upon hundreds of dollars(not tested thought)

Somethimes I even content lock my download when they fill the survey they are redirected to another content locker.

Who cares what they think? I need money :)

If you are going the survey route, you will need a lot of traffic to make a nice amount of money. Not necessarily Google 1st spot traffic tho, really depends on the demand of your download.

Are you simply meaning that, because of bounce backs, it takes a lot of hits to get someone to fill it out?

I'd also like to hear someone's experience with popunders, I hadn't considered this.

So it is pretty safe to say that file hosting sites are crap for making any money?

This would probably make the most money, but as i'm trying to be a legit source of a utility in organic SERPs, i don't want to get docked for that. I don't want to have to drive traffic to my site manually. That said, DO search engines look for things like content blockers?

do you have an exclusive on your product? or are there going to be a bunch of other people right behind you with better offers? my opinion would be to charge something that people wouldnt trip on paying, like 5 bux or less and have them paypal you.

keep it light as you can so its more like a quick impulse buy then a big gawdy squeeze page with the high pressure theme trying to solve your customers most pressing problem for a mere $x.99

as a programmer, selling scripts for a couple buxs isnt great money but its a very simple yes or no decision for the customer. replicate a bunch of times and your set, keep it diverse and your revenue streams form a river that one day will flood

use the other members ideas as well but try to find that sweet spot where your not annoying your customers yet still scooping up every penny you can
