I wanted to start a discussion on keyword research and choosing a good niche to setup a website.

What would your criteria be for it to be a "good niche" or just a "meh niche"

For instance, I found a niche that will make me around $50 a sale.
Only 9,000 competitors with "quotes' and 18,000,000 without quotes
And allintitle: keyword , only 900 results
it gets 130 searches a day, and has no "authority sites" ranking.

Would you consider this a good niche (i would guess no based on the amount of results)

But talk about what you look at when you are picking a niche.

The fast ranking depends on the search results and the competition, but the sales depends on the need.
If there is traffic looking exactly for the thing you are selling, then yes, with the results you have found you can make cash fast.

Research very good the keyword/phrase. Try google trends, google insights search and google keyword tool, then make your analysis.

Don't forget to right everything on a list of paper.

If your market that you chose has a need, then you will make money. The first thing that I look at to decide if whether or not I'm going after a market is commercial viability.

well .. are there products being sold to this niche ? .. are there super affiliates promoting it ?

Target your keyword [exact phrase] with PPC .. pay enough to be #1 above the organic results and see what kind of money it would make.

If it's a viable market move to seo :)

Check out ebay: is the product or product category on sale on ebay and does it get bids?
This is to determine will people buy your product online.
