I think this could be the answer we've always been looking for about dublicate content penalty and it's from google official blog. Here it is:

"A few months ago, Adam wrote a great post on dealing with duplicate content. The most important things to know about duplicate content are:

*Google wants to serve up unique results and does a great job of picking a version of your content to show if your sites includes duplication. If you don't want to worry about sorting through duplication on your site, you can let us worry about it instead.

*Duplicate content doesn't cause your site to be penalized. If duplicate pages are detected, one version will be returned in the search results to ensure variety for searchers.

*Duplicate content doesn't cause your site to be placed in the supplemental index. Duplication may indirectly influence this however, if links to your pages are split among the various versions, causing lower per-page PageRank."

Thanks. I've also noticed that you can serve the same text on different domains and they all appear there.

Exactly, if a duplicate content penalty worked as most of the IM parrots suggest, there would be no reason for RSS. Frankly, rather than trying to enlighten the hopeless who want more than anything to believe the jackass standing next to his rented Ferrari selling all his secrets for $47.00, wouldn't it just be more beneficial to keep this type of information to yourself?

Oh, and newbie my ass. I hate these moronic forum designations that suggest my life started when I made a post at BHW.

    Hey everyone,

Here is what my buddy a big G told me about this issue.

First duplicate content itself is not a problem. You will find duplicate content all over the results pages.

Here is how it works (according to my source).

Big G finds a page of content and indexes that page based on the content and keywords.

As G continues searching the web looking for content it finds your page on someone else's site, this creates a problem for G. What to do with this new page because it is already indexed... hmmmm.

So now G begins to look at other factors to determine which one is more authoritative. It begins to look at PR, domain age, backlinks, etc.

After crunching all of this information it pushes the more authoritative content higher up the search page.

    Thats it.

    Seriously

    Thanks for the share.

I also have known this for awhile. Most of my promotional sites are just all copy-n-paste, and they still get indexed and ranked:p

I was of the understanding that G looks at who published the content first and gives credit (i.e., higher rank) to the original "owner" of the content. Apparently, that's not the case because I created a site to promote a certain product and wrote a long, detailed review of said product. My review page was ranking #1 for the target keyword for several weeks, and then it slipped a bit. So who outranked me? Some social bookmarks and a Squ1d00 lens whose author published my review verbatim (without quoting or referencing my work). I contacted Squ1d00 about it, and they eventually got around to removing the offending lens.
