What is the legality regarding reposting other people's articles on your own blog/site?

I'm assuming it's illegal to straight up copy someone's full article without giving credit, but what if it's only an excerpt, say 1 or 2 paragraphs, and then a link to the original article? Is that okay? Is that legal?

And what about pictures? Can you use someone else's picture as long as you host it on your own server?

Posting a small excerpt with a link back to the original article is fine unless otherwise stated by the owner's site (some site owners may have issues with someone making a profit off their articles, full or excerpt).

Posting other people's pictures is rather tricky. If they host their pictures on sites like flickr, you should check the copyright. If it's on their personal website, you will need to ask permission first because those pictures may not be in the public domain. One of my blogs, I have to have written permission to post pictures of my subjects and when people steal, borrow, or use the photos, they really do open themselves up to a lawsuit (and yes, three people have gotten sued for using my photos by the people I photographed). Some people have huge issues with other people using their pictures while others do not. Doesn't hurt to ask.

I'm talking more specifically about news articles. For each post of my blog I would use the first paragraph or two from the news article and then put a link to the original article. Is that ok?

Technically, posting pictures from news sites is illegal, however, I've never heard of a news site going after a blogger for posting pictures.

Posting news excerpt is fine. One should never post an entire news article on their blog. Always link directly back to the source. However, make sure you don't come across something like the following:

Copyright 2010 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

That copyright is from ABCnews.com. So it wouldn't be ok to post excerpt of their articles (legally).
