Does anyone know the legalities behind linking to say ...a torrent site's search results? I'm pretty sure direct linking to torrents of copyrighted material is illegal, but what about just pointing in the right direction lol...?

I've been searching for a while for an answer to this, not finding anything solid. Pretty much everything is "well I think" type of answers, if anyone's more informed on the subject I'd appreciate any info you can provide :)

The message in a link may be legal. Suppose you link to an illegal torrent saying "wow look at this illegal torrent" - I'm pretty sure that's not illegal...

But if you say "go here and steal this before it's down" then it's another story.

It depends on your country, among other things. I would suggest consulting an internet lawyer.

If they want to come after you they will always try, using excuses like "facilitating copyright infringement". If you are small time then it's unlikely anyone will care.

Thanks Ramirez. The torrent sites all come up in Google's results - so you'd think you could link to them as well..But of course rules don't apply to everybody.
