I'm planning on starting a video sharing website kind of like these:

    Break
    Liveleak
    Worldstarhiphop

    Etc

My question is- where do these websites host the videos? on their own server? I'm pretty sure youtube is self hosted but what about the others? Do they use some kind of 3rd party service like brightcove.com?

I know that there are certain loopholes around legal issues since the content is uploaded by the users and not the site owner. Does that mean I can self-host all my videos as long as I have a solid disclaimer and email address for DCMA requests? Anyone have any tips or experience to share?

PS - I have a custom HTML/PHP WSHH clone theme I can share for free if there's any interest.

You can always give a clear disclaimer. Also depending where you host your site you can get away with some stuff (not recommending anything)

If you want to self hosted the video, you can use offshore hosting that will ignore all DMCA notice.

Just search "offshore hosting" on Google. Warez and movies sites always using this type of hosting.

Definitely host videos outside of your application servers. Use for example AWS S3 bucket (like Vine App) or other alternative. This approach help you horizontally scale out your app.

depends on the country of hosting and website operation, but it is always both riskier and rewarding to host the videos yourself

The big boys use self hosting for streaming their videos but it means big bucks per month to maintain streaming all
of that data and is not worth it unless you have money to really invest and get your project up and running.
