I own a lot of websites and sometimes it is hard to manage all of them. About 2 months ago, I hired an employee to help me with my main one. I created a Wordpress account for him and everything so he had access to the website.

Things didn't work out after about a month and a half later as he wanted something else so he quit. It was also during this time that there was a lot of turmoil and it had slipped my mind to delete the access he had to my website after this.

Yesterday, I noticed that he had created a couple of links on my main website that pointed to some websites of his. I know it must have been him since he is the only person to have HAD access; I deleted his account immediately after this.

My question is... do I have legal grounds to go after him? He didn't delete or destroy anything. It seems like he just slipped a couple of links in there and that's it.

    What should I do?

I'd just be sure that he had no access, delete the outbound links he created and move on... that is too small a matter to spend any time or energy on to have any value to you.

You're absolutely right. But I would like to know if there is any legal ground whatsoever JUST IN CASE I find myself in a situation like this again? Although I'll make sure to be diligent about stuff like this in the future.

I'm assuming that from a legal point of view, someone creating links because they had access to a site is different than if they were to hack the site and create links, right?

Just like BTB said... Just delete the links and move on. If I was that guy I would have been honest and ask you instead for a link lol, there would have been more chance I would have success that way.

Lol yeah I would have happily given him a link or two if he had just asked for it.

Links are... just links. It didn't hurt your business so I also suggest you just move on. This would be a difference scenario though if it had been FRONT PAGE links in large fonts and in red pointing to his site.

And assuming you go to court, what kind of damages did he do with a link or two? Nothing really so it's not worth it.

You would have some legal ground if you had some kind of written contract with him outlining what he can and what he can not do while logged in and working on your website.

Next time when you hire someone be it an employee or contractor have a written contract along confidentiality agreement. This should stop them from doing something they supposed to not or divulging any sensitive info they may come across while working on your website. If it doesn't, you'll have solid legal grounds to go after them.

Let it go and move on. You should have better things to worry about than a guy getting a couple temporary links for a few months.
