HI,

I've decided to ditch the company that id worked for in order to focus 100% on my affiliate projects. The company still wants to hire me as a consultant however, and its mainly for my web scraping skillset.

The data i can deliver falls in 3 categories:

  • URL:s for outreach. Columns include: URL, Root, Mozdata, Majesticdata, domain age, email adress
  • Serp data for Seo competition research. Scraped data from Google, using for example 10 big shorttail keywords (local language and Google TLD) in a nische for say 30 european markets. Deliver 100 positions deep, and positions appended. Columns: URL, Root, Position, Moz, Majestic, domain age, Title, description etc etc.
  • Onpage scrapes of various types. Ex. all pages on a big site, or all the metadata for every product type of sort x on domain x.
I have no idea what the data might be worth to them at the moment. I think its pretty decent though. I can't be replaced that easily, and they need it in order to scale their linkbuilding and other things.

It's a puzzler really, since i don't know the "market price" of scraped data. On top of that, should i charge them per row, per hour or by another price model?

Would really appriciate some input!

Cheers,

Companies, regardless of their size, always have these (set of) essential people that could potentially collapse the business if they were to leave.

looks like you got them by the balls, name a high price and see what they say. If they say no, then you've left anyway, if on the other hand they value that much they might negotiate a deal. Looks to me as though you hold the aces

Per hour, since you will be spending time that was supposed to be used for your current affiliate projects, anything else wouldn't make sense, Unless you want to squeeze some money off your company you should charge them Per data batch you sent, ;) that is it from me,

Ignore whatever market price , charge per hour

Think of how much your time is worth and what amount nake sense for you to help them with

Remember , you use the time you can grow your business to help them !

Work out what you were on hourly for them as an employee then multiply it a little based on what you think you can get away with - then offer them what you think they need, like 3 days a month or whatever it might be.

Don't worry about going rates, you know what they need, what they make, what they pay so just try to take advantage of your position and broker the best deal for you.

Tell them you are not interested and walk away. Then they will give their (probably good) offer if they really need you that bad.

Thanks for your input guys, Really appriciated.

Im going to suggest 3x the gross rate per hour that i have now and se what they say. Otherwise fuck it - i also have additional costs as my own employer now right?

Unless you need the money you should walk away and concentrate on your own business. It's like breaking up with a girlfriend in a way.

You've got a new girl so even though it might be easy to go back to your ex for some slap and tickle, you should devote yourself to your new love.

Go all in if you can.

I am going to go against the grain here and suggest you stay on as a consultant. They say never keep all your eggs in one basket. If you are financially very secure with a string of online business and big savings, then you should let it go.

But, it's always a good idea to have multiple streams of revenue even if the second revenue stream is smaller. Now, you are obviously worth a lot to your company for them to offer this proposition. You could go about it two ways. You could say you are not interested but will consider it if they give a great offer and try to get a great offer for them. Or you could simply charge them a very decent hourly rate like 3X the base price, something that's well worth your time. But, don't agree to train a new candidate for the company or you could also charge a bomb to train another candidate to do this.

And the most important thing, do we(bhw) get to learn how you do this since we are offering suggestions to you ? LOL

Give them your salary price or bigger than that, if you're not easy to replace you can work from home when you have time for that and get paid.

Do keep us updated how things goes. Also its better to charge per hour and if you think you are providing quality service then easily charge 2x or 3x

Thx for the additional suggestions, and interest in the thread!

OFC Ill get back to you. My exit will be from 1 month from now circa, maybe earlier. Maybe by then i also have some additional local (i live in a industry cluster for my niche) buyers for the service.

Cheers,

I sell scraped data to a few companies - I charge per month per product. It takes about half an hour a month to put together, and I each set of data sells for $$$ per feed.

I would set a high price per hour or negotiate a high fixed price per month... they need you that's obvious!

Sounds like you have all the leverage, ask for a higher than market price amount and see if they want to negotiate or if they accept your offer.

At least 4x your hourly salary. If they got another consultant in that's what they would be paying. If they're not happy with that negotiate. Easier to come down a little and be happy then go in too low and regret it.

Ah a fellow scraper in arms, welcome to the thread good sir. Interesting, did you make a similiar path as i'm on route for or did you setup a actual service?
